Unite 4 Marriage

Unite 4 Marriage Local organizers and national equality orgs are coming together Tuesday April 28, 2015, as the Suprem Hollingsworth (case against Prop 8) and US v.

On 25th of March, 2013, local SF community organizers joined forces to rally the community on the eve and day the US Supreme Court heard the cases Perry v. Windsor (case against Defense of Marriage Act DOMA). During that week we organized under www.facebook.com/march4equality. The Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) released their decisions on June 26th, 2013. They returned the Prop 8 case to a lower

court, thus legalizing marriage in California but leaving the question of nation-wide marriage equality unanswered. That same day they struck down Sec 3 of DOMA, seriously gutting the law and setting the stage for litigation across the country. The day SCOTUS released their decision we threw a Community Celebration in Castro called Day of Decision SF. We organized under www.facebook.com/DayofDecisionsf

The ensuing wave of lawsuits against state gay marriage bans relied on the US v. Windsor decision and have successfully struck down may of these bans. According to ScotusBlog, "The focus of the Supreme Court’s review (April 28, 2015) will be a decision issued in early November, 2014, by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. That decision, breaking ranks with most other courts, upheld bans on marriage or marriage-recognition in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee." Join us this April 28th, 2015, on the steps of City Hall in San Francisco 5 pm- 7 pm. We are working with more than eight national organizations to send one message to the US Supreme Court: We demand marriage equality in every US State! Marriage Equality is one component of full equality. The LGBT Community is excited to see national-marriage equality in 2015. The SCOTUS ruling is expected in late June, right before San Francisco Pride. What a celebration it will be! Come join us in Castro for the party in June, 2015. We hope that the ruling in 2015 will enable litigation against local, state and federal laws that discriminate on the basis of gender expression or sexual orientation. Important cases to understand:
Baker v. Nelson
Loving v Virginia
US v Windsor
Hollingsworth v Perry
