The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, located at 45 Shelley Drive in John McLaren Park, is one of the most spectacular performance venues in San Francisco. The Greek-style amphitheater is situated in a bucolic setting away from urban noises. With its outstanding acoustics and generous green room facilities, the theater is ap
propriate for all kinds of musical and dramatic performances. Groups interested in renting the facility should contact the Department's Permits and Reservations office. This page is run by the Friends of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater (aka Friends of JGA ). We are a 501c3 focused on the development of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is located in John McLaren Park, which is San Francisco's second largest park at 317 acres and is located in the southeast sector of the city. Unlike the city's more famous Golden Gate Park, which is noted for its horticultural splendor, McLaren Park is a natural park which rises from 275 ft. to 520 ft. above sea level. Its seven miles of hiking trails provide visitors access to a variety of beautiful settings and unparalleled views of the city. The park is ideal for hikers, nature lovers, bird watchers and folks simply interested in escaping the cacophony of urban life without having to leave the city. In addition to a large group picnic area, the park also provides small and private picnic facilities throughout. Initially spearheaded by local natives and residents near the park, the vision for Jerry Garcia Amphitheater started in 1995 by Excelsior resident Jo Coffey. The idea was later picked up in 2002 during the revitalization of Crocker Amazon Playground. Eventually, and after going through the usual San Francisco political process to make this happen, the unnveiling and renaming of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater happened in August - 2005 @ the 3rd Annual Jerry Day Festival. Tiff Garcia, brother of Jerry Garcia, welcomed the audience to the first show at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. Later, on October 29th, the Mayor "dedicated" JGA with the local community activists.
