The Women’s Debate Institute is heartbroken by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. As a gender-inclusive organization, we are proud to welcome trans and nonbinary students, staff, and alumni every year. You are a vital part of our community.
This decision not only ignores the guidance of leading medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, it will allow states to deny young people access to care that is safe, evidence-based, and lifesaving.
To our trans students: this is a cruel and unjust decision. It does not define your worth or the love surrounding you. Please know that you are seen. You are valued. You are not alone.
In sadness and solidarity, we echo Justice Sotomayor's dissent:
“[This decision] authorizes, without second thought, untold harm to transgender children and the parents and families who love them.”
We remain more committed than ever to fostering a space where all students are supported, affirmed, and able to thrive.
