La belleza original, 2023 accompanied by handcrafted Butterfly Shields

This hand-carved woodblock is printed by hand, with oil pastel added to the jaguar after the piece has dried.

Inspired by Diego Rivera’s quote, “La belleza original es la belleza de la verdad” — Original beauty is the beauty of truth, the piece invites us to reflect on beauty beyond physical standards, reminding us that authentic beauty lives in inner truth.

The image reimagines Rivera’s famous fresco Indian Warrior, depicting an Aztec warrior plunging a stone knife into the neck of a conquistador. Jaguar warriors were an elite Aztec military force who embodied the strength and spirit of the jaguar in battle.

You can view this work in person at Acción Latina’s Juan R. Fuentes Gallery.

De Aquí y De Allá is on view through June 26.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our artist talk with Nicolas Gonzalez-Medina and students Faustina Ngo, Nayelli Rosas, and Jojo Ty this weekend. ✨

It is really beautiful getting to hold space for conversations around migration, identity, resistance, storytelling, and the importance of printmaking within our communities.

Huge thanks to Lucia Obregón for moderating such a thoughtful conversation, and to everyone who shared their experiences and questions with us.

These gatherings remind us why community spaces for art and dialogue matter so much. ❤️

You can still catch De Aquí y De Allá at Acción Latina through June 26th. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 1PM–5PM, and private showings are also available by email appointment.

Join us for the second activation of De Aquí y De Allá: Resistance & Resilience, an artist talk centered on the stories, politics, and creative practices behind the exhibition.

Moderated by Lucia Obregon, the conversation will feature lead artist Nicolas Gonzalez-Medina alongside exhibiting artists Nayelli Rosas, Faustina Ngo, and Jojo, whose works explore culture, identity, resistance, and community through woodblock printing and activism.

Together, the artists will discuss the why, how, and importance of their work, offering insight into the process, history, and revolutionary roots of printmaking traditions.

Still soaking it all in 💛

Thank you to everyone who showed up, sang along, danced, volunteered, and filled the room with so much love at the 44th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular.

So much gratitude to our incredible artists, Alex Cuba, Warango, Diabbla, and DJ Lizzie Al Toque for treating us with their music, energy, and passion.

Endless thanks to the Acción Latina and El Tecolote staff, production crew and volunteers who made this night possible. Forty-four years of Encuentro means 44 years of community, resistance, and culture, but one felt especially powerful.

Gracias por el apoyo, nos vemos para el próximo año. ❤️
