10 YEARS OF PASEO ARTÍSTICO 🎉✨

On Saturday, October 10, we’re celebrating a decade of art, music and community in the Calle 24 Latino Cultual District with a FREE anniversary block party at 24th and Harrison.

Since 2016, Paseo Artístico has brought thousands of artists, neighbors and families together across the Mission. For our 10th anniversary, we’re taking it to the street with live music, DJs, local vendors, community murals, kids activities and performances throughout the Latino Cultural District.

Featuring Inti Mystica, Agua Pura, Fogo Na Roupa, Sin Frontera Dreams, DJ Quest, Liliana Herrera, Mission District Young Musicians Program, Sew Frisco and more.

The day will also include a special work-in-progress presentation of Paul S. Flores’ “Clothes on Fire: The Carlos Aceituno Story,” honoring the life and legacy of Fogo Na Roupa founder Carlos Aceituno and the history of Carnaval San Francisco.

THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our Otra Onda/Otra Vez Artist Talk✨

It meant a lot to see so many people come together to hear the stories behind these photographs, especially because these images reflect a community and culture and a part of the Mission that has too often pushed aside and punished.

Thank you to our artists and panelists—Lou Dematteis, Joe Ramos, Gato Rivera, Gustavo Vazquez, and Maria Penido, our moderator Alexa Treviño, and everyone who helped make the night happen.

We’re welcoming two additions to the Otra Onda/Otra Vez artist talk: Maria Pinedo and Gustavo Vazquez.

Maria joined Galería de la Raza in 1977 and later became director of Studio 24. She brings firsthand knowledge of the Galería and the community that shaped the original Otra Onda exhibition.

Gustavo was part of the original 1981 exhibition and has photographs on display in Otra Onda/Otra Vez. He is also an independent filmmaker and professor emeritus at UC Santa Cruz.

They’ll join Lou Dematteis, Joe Ramos, and Gato Rivera and moderator Alexa Treviño for a conversation about the exhibition, Mission lowrider culture and the history surrounding the images.

BEHIND THE PHOTO: 24th & Mission, 1980

Photographer Lou Dematteis looks back at lowriding in the Mission District in the late 1970s, when people cruised and gathered along Mission Street from 24th to 16th and beyond. With a limited number of frames on each roll of film, he had to choose every shot carefully.

His photograph, 24th & Mission, 1980, is now part of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collection and is featured in Corazón y vida: Lowriding Culture, an exhibition tracing 80 years of lowriding history.

45 years after Otra Onda first brought Mission lowrider culture into Galería de la Raza, photographers Lou Dematteis, Joe Ramos, and Gato Rivera are back together to reflect on the original 1981 exhibition.

Moderated by Alexa “LexMex” Treviño, the conversation will revisit the photographs, and the people and culture behind them.
