Save Pangolins

Save Pangolins We envision a world where all eight pangolin species are secure in the wild. To get there, we must stop the killing, stop the trafficking, and stop the demand.

You can help by spreading the word and learning about pangolins. http://savepangolins.org Save Pangolins is a nonprofit project whose mission is to conserve pangolins by transforming relationships between people and pangolins. We aim to inspire people to conserve them, change behavior that drives the illegal trade, and increase the capacity of conservation on the ground where pangolins live. Save

Pangolins provides expertise and leadership in coordinating global pangolin conservation efforts and runs campaigns that engage the public and generate funds for conservation. Save Pangolins drives support to conservation efforts in pangolin range states and raises public awareness of pangolins around the world. Save Pangolins also manages the World Pangolin Day social media pages on Twitter and Facebook.

"Even in the most improbable of situations, conservation works. We just need to do more of it." —Jon Paul Rodríguez, Chair of the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission

Pangolins have become a conservation priority globally in recent years as they're the most highly trafficked wild mammal, with upwards of 200,000 consumed annually for their meat and scales in parts of Asia.

Pangolins are especially vulnerable to poaching because of their slow reproductive rate, their sensitivity to capture-induced stress, and their instinct to curl into a ball when threatened rather than try to escape.

Though some laws exist to protect these endangered animals, there’s no doubt we need more education.

We focus on behavior change campaigns in places like China and Vietnam designed to educate consumers and make the consumption of pangolin products socially unacceptable. Two years after the launch of our campaign in China, we saw a 28.5% decrease in the perceived medicinal value of pangolin scales!

The more we increase public awareness of the plight of the pangolin, the more we can increase conservation efforts and protect these remarkable animals from extinction.

Why are pangolins hunted or poached?

Pangolin scales consist of keratin, a substance found in fingernails, hair, and horns. Despite lacking any substantiated medicinal properties, these scales are utilised in traditional Chinese and Vietnamese medicine to try and combat ailments such as arthritis, lactation, tumours and ulcers. Additionally, pangolins are hunted for their meat, be it for bushmeat or selling pangolin meat as fine delicacies in Asia.
