Most people think that caregiving is a mother’s job, overlooking the equally vital role that fathers play in raising a child.

This month, as Dost Education relaunches its responsive caregiving programme for parents of children aged 0 to 3, we’re reaching out to include fathers in the dialogue. Through phone calls and community meetings, we’re raising awareness on how a father’s everyday interactions are occasions for bonding and learning for both.

Research has linked greater father involvement in caregiving with better emotional regulation, stronger language development and improved school readiness. Additionally, when caregiving is shared, and mothers carry less of the burden, families have more opportunities to connect, support one another and thrive.

We believe that no conversation on responsive caregiving in a child’s earliest years is complete without fathers, and we are on a mission to translate this into changed attitudes and behaviours in our communities.

Did you know that lullabies and songs heard from birth can help nurture oral language development in young children?

This month, as Dost Education relaunches its responsive caregiving programme for parents of children aged 0 to 3, thousands of parents are about to learn that too. Through phone calls and community meetings, we’re raising awareness of how a caregiver’s response to a baby’s bids for attention can create an environment of safety and support, helping children connect, bond and express themselves.

In keeping with the Navchetna National Framework, we’re showing parents how to weave singing and storytelling into everyday moments, from feeding and bathing to tucking a child into bed. By supporting parents in building these small, repeatable daily behaviours, we empower them in laying the foundations for their child’s early learning and preparing the child for school and for life.

A mothers’ meeting in Almora, Uttarakhand informs mothers of children aged 0 to 3 that baby’s health depends on mummy’s health. The mothers learn to separate fact from myth around issues like breastfeeding, nutrition, hygiene, maternal health and more.

This month, Dost Education revitalises its outreach through phone-based technologies and community meetings to amplify best practices on responsive caregiving in the earliest years in keeping with the Navchetna framework.

WE’VE GOT NEWS! Dost Education has signed a three-year MoU with the Department of Bal Vikas evam Pushtahar, Government of Uttar Pradesh. We are excited because we can now deepen our work on caregiver engagement in the state and scale responsive caregiving through public systems.

In our Tech + Touch approach, wide reach through technology is now complemented with being directly in touch with families. We will be working alongside frontline workers and government systems so that caregivers receive consistent support to nurture children’s development through everyday moments of Talk, Care and Play.

As we scale, we’re on our way to building an evidence-led model that governments can own, strengthen and sustain so that responsive caregiving reaches millions of children through the systems that already serve them.

We are grateful to the Department of Bal Vikas evam Pushtahar, Government of Uttar Pradesh, for their trust and partnership, and look forward to this next chapter together.

Should babies be given water, honey, or other adjunct liquids during the first few months? How does a mother’s own nutrition and wellbeing influence her baby’s health and development?

Through short, accessible videos and community sessions at Anganwadi Centres, we reached out to mothers and caregivers with facts and practical guidance, helping them make informed choices for themselves and their little ones.

What do children remember most? Not the toys they were given, but the time they spent with the people who love them.

For Vinod, a daily wage worker from Gidhariya village in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, an unexpected month-long break from work became an opportunity to be more present in his young son’s life.

“Whenever I’m at home, my child wants to be with me all the time. We play together, take pictures, create happy memories, and I even swing him on my legs. These moments bring us both so much joy,” he reflects with affection.

Vinod says the Fathers’ Meetings organised by Dost Education helped him discover simple ways to turn everyday moments into opportunities for play, learning and connection. Today, he believes that the greatest gift he can give his son is his love, his presence and his time.

At Dost, we encourage more fathers to become more actively involved in their children’s lives as the benefits extend far beyond the moment to increased confidence, learning and development.
