San Francisco has just been named the best city in the world for gay life, and no other city came close.
The city scored 70 out of 100 in the LGBTQ+ category of the 2026 Sexually Liberal City Index, which ranked 41 cities worldwide on gay bars, LGBTQ+ events, gender recognition and anti-discrimination protections.
Manchester came second on 62. Cologne took third on 61. What earned San Francisco the top spot wasn't just bars and parties, but decades of community infrastructure that never went away, from the Castro to Pride traditions that have outlasted every backlash thrown at them.
Miami came fifth, Atlanta sixth. So three American cities in the global top 10 for gay life, which sounds like a good news story until you look at what's holding them back.
Miami has the highest density of gay bars of any city in the index and maximum marks for its venues and events. What dragged its score down was gender-affirmation and anti-discrimination protections. The report said plainly that the nine US cities measured are fighting under the current administration.
So the flags are still up and the bars are still full. It's everything outside them that's slipping.
