Thank you to All My Usos () for inviting us to table at their wonderful Family Day BBQ event at Gilman Park, this past Saturday, Aug 15th. We educated more than 25 people and tested 2. We all start somewhere so thank you for the opportunity.

Thank you so much to Al Perez () for inviting us to table at Pistahan Parade and Festival () Aug 8th and 9th, the largest Filipino celebration out side of the Philippines. We educated more than 70 people and screened 18 people!

Unfortunately, the Philippines remains one of the countries with stubbornly high hepatitis B prevalence estimated at around 10% so it is critical we continue to test and educate Filipinos.

EDITED - SF Supervisors still need to complete a vote on World Hep Day:
Along with the declaration of June 2026 as Hepatitis B Awareness Month in California, Supervisor Chyanne Chen () introduced a resolution declaring July 28th as World Hepatitis Day. San Francisco City Supervisors are scheduled to vote on it on September 1st.
San Francisco City Hall was lit in red, green, and yellow to celebrate the day!

California Treasurer Ma and Deputy Health Officer of the SF Department of Health, Dr. Seema Jain, joined us for our celebration.

A huge thank you to Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen () for officially declaring June 2026 as Hepatitis B Awareness Month in California!

Up to 380,000 Californians are living with chronic hepatitis B, but most don't know it. Together, we can save lives and prevent severe liver disease.

Hepatitis B is often called a "silent" disease because up to 90% of people show no symptoms until severe liver damage or cancer occurs later in life.

Here is the good news: it is completely preventable and treatable. Routine testing during pregnancy, timely infant birth doses, and early testing and vaccination for adults can help eliminate this disease for good.

The Hepatitis B Foundation has released its response to the proposed changes to the childhood immunization schedule. We urge you to read this.

Their position is clear: they continue to recommend the universal hepatitis B birth dose and vaccination of all children against hepatitis B, regardless of risk factors.

Why this matters:

• Hepatitis B can pass from parent to newborn during birth. Infants infected this way have up to a 90% chance of developing chronic, lifelong infection.
• Since the universal birth dose was recommended in 1991, childhood hepatitis B infections in the U.S. have dropped by roughly 99%.
• Hepatitis B remains one of the leading causes of liver cancer worldwide.
• The current schedule was built by physicians, scientists, and public health experts through years of rigorous review — not overnight.

As the Foundation notes, access to vaccines isn't only about insurance coverage. It's also about access to accurate, timely information so parents can make the best decisions for their families. Framing a well-studied schedule as unsafe undermines that — and it erodes decades of trust between families, their providers, and the researchers who built these protections.

The health of our children should not be a political issue.

On August 10, President Trump signed an executive order calling for sweeping changes to the childhood immunization schedule — including cutting the list of universally recommended vaccines from 18 diseases down to 11. It also calls for splitting the MMR vaccine into three separate shots that aren't FDA-approved or even available in the U.S.
Public health experts warn that spreading shots across more visits leaves children unprotected for longer, raising the risk they catch a preventable disease before they make it back for the next dose.
This is alarming, and it is another decision made without scientific basis. More information to come
