We are thankful to Ruby author Preeti Vangani who joined us earlier this month for a Write-In session on personal and communal grief. We read breathtaking work, wrote elegies, and shared stories of loss. Filled with gratitude for this supportive space we’re a part of.

Last week, Rubies were treated to free headshots by photographer extraordinaire Sarah Joyce. All thanks to the generosity of our friends at WikiPortraits! Our very own Jennifer 8. Lee was also on hand to share about WikiPortrait’s mission and to sign anyone up interested in becoming a Wiki editor and supporting the mission of Women in Red, a global movement to increase the number of biographies of non-men, currently 80% of all biographies. If Women in Red sounds familiar, we held salons last year with our good friend, and also fellow Ruby, Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight!

Along with a fab photoshoot, we feasted on SanJalisco and enjoyed a delicious taco bar for happy hour. In case you haven’t noticed, we can’t get enough of their delicious Mexican food!

Did you know SF legacy business SanJalisco has officially been running since 1988 but the family food business first started in the Mission District by Anita and Vicente Padilla, who arrived from Jalisco in the 1940s? Today, their daughter Dolores, owner of SanJalisco, keeps the family tradition alive by serving homestyle dishes passed down from generation to generation.

🗣️Bay Area! Just a friendly reminder that applications are now open for the 2026 - 2027 Creatives in Residence program at the Ruby!

Our Creatives in Residence (CIR) program supports QT BIPOC Bay Area creatives with 10 fully-funded year-long memberships and includes access to our community workspace, resources, and events like our workshops, readings, community meals and so much more!

Residencies will span one year, from October 1, 2026 - October 1, 2027. Submit your application by August 15, 2026.

Along with CIRs, we are also looking for new members to join our dynamic community of Bay Area nonbinary, transfeminine, and woman-identified creatives. Check out what current Ruby member Katie G. had to say about the Ruby and the wonderful people here:

I have been so starved of like- minded friends since moving to the Bay Area, and in finding the Ruby, I found a community of people who are creative, interesting, principled, and warmhearted.
