Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Plaza, at the heart of the Castro District, is celebrated for its role in LGBT civil rights history.

Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza is a Castro neighborhood organization committed to maintaining and improving this public plaza – named in honor of the politician and civil rights icon – so that Harvey Milk’s legacy may continue to educate and inspire. We are undertaking an effort to create a fitting tribute to the plaza’s history and namesake in order to reimagine and reinvigorate this public space.

In 2021 the USNS Harvey Milk was launched and named after Harvey Milk, himself a Navy veteran who was forced to resign in 1955 due to his sexual orientation. The ship is part of the John Lewis class of oiler ships named after civil rights leaders, including Earl Warren, Robert F. Kennedy, and more. The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza is appalled by the news today that the federal government Is planning the renaming of this ship - and intentionally timed the announcement to occur during Pride month.

It is moments like this that we are reminded of the importance of reimagining Harvey Milk Plaza to become a space that will truly honor Harvey's name, spirit, and legacy. While the federal government walks away from heroes like Harvey Milk, San Francisco stands strong in our commitment to social justice, the celebration of diversity, and above all, hope.

You gotta give 'em hope.

Thanks to everyone for coming out for a super festive and music-filled "Protest of Joy" on Harvey Milk Day last Thursday! We were joined by SF Mayor Daniel Lurie and longtime supporter of the new Harvey Milk Plaza, CA Senator Scott Wiener.

Thank you to director Rob Epstein for joining for the 40th anniversary screening of "The Times of Harvey Milk" at the Roxie Theater hosted by the Roxie Theater and cosponsored by FHMP and Opera Parallele.

“'Our commitment all along has been to include and involve the grassroots of the community,' Springfield says. 'We decided we would honor not only Harvey but people throughout the history, past and present, of the Castro. Harvey came to San Francisco and landed in the Castro because something was under way here. Harvey came here with tens of thousands of other gay men and women. We are committed to lifting up Harvey, but we want people to understand the broader story of what happened in the Castro.' He notes the importance of activists such as Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon, and Sally Miller Gearhart."

Celebrating Harvey Milk Day today!

Today, we celebrate Harvey and his legacy of uplifting the LGBTQ+ community, as well as his call-to-action to remain engaged and to act.

Join us TOMORROW Thursday, May 22nd for Harvey Milk Day: A Protest of Joy—a powerful celebration of community, resilience, and the enduring legacy of Harvey Milk. Kicking off with a hands-on placard-making session, we’ll honor Milk’s spirit of activism and hope.⁠

The main event features a powerful rally speeches, alongside stirring performances by the San Francisco Pride Band (), the Sacred & Profane Chamber Chorus () (premiering a new choral work based on Milk’s Freedom Day Speech), and the cast of "Harvey Milk Reimagined" from Opera Parallèle.

We’ll then take to the streets for a joyous march to the Roxie Theater, where we’ll come together for the annual screening of Oscar winning documentary, "The Times of Harvey Milk.⁠"
