STOCK and BEYOND - How to Get a Custom Book Cover

Do you want the first sale? That first click that takes the reader to the page where your book will sell?

We don't judge books by their covers, but we sure as heck do understand that the cover is the first point of contact: it's the smile, the welcome, the come on in and sit awhile, and it better portray your product in a knowledgeable, complete, and BEAUTIFUL manner without looking like the hundreds of thousands of other covers out there.

The best covers are no longer reserved for the big publishers.

Come find out how, learn a bit about cover creation from start to finish, custom imagery, and designers you can hire that work for the Big Five as well.

“Social Media for Writers: Before Publication and After”

Why should I engage in social media? What social media platforms are right for me? Where do I even begin to build up an online audience? How do Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs differ from each other and how can they be used in concert? Many new authors are asking these questions, while published authors seek to expand their social media presence and leverage new tools. An online presence isn't built overnight, but more publishers are seeking authors willing to engage with their audience in a digital space. This presentation will break down the major tools of social media and how to begin to build your audience, even before you are published. Then we'll discuss tools to use after you are published to leverage your presence and book visibility. You'll also learn about conducting a blog tour and what it means to your promotion efforts.

Corrine Jackson lives in San Francisco, where she works at a top marketing agency managing campaigns for several Fortune 500 clients. She has bachelor and master degrees in English, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University. Her novels include If I Lie (Simon Pulse) and Touched and Pushed (KTeen), the first two books in the Sense Thieves trilogy. Visit her at CorrineJackson.com or on Twitter at .

Monthly meeting info:

Candice Hern, Power of POV
This workshop will present some basic skills for using deep 3rd-person point-of-view to bring characters to life, including some common pitfalls to avoid. This will not be a "To Head-Hop or Not To Head-Hop" workshop, but will instead focus on how to make the most effective use of POV in deepening and enriching characterization, how to REALLY get inside, and stay inside, a character's head.

Candice Hern is the award-winning author of historical romance novels set during the English Regency, a period she knows well through years of collecting antiques and fashion prints of the era. She travels to England regularly, always in search of more historical and local color to help bring her books to life, and prides herself on the detailed research that goes into each novel. Her books have won praise for their "intelligence and elegant romantic sensibility" (Romantic Times) as well as "delicious wit and luscious sensuality" (Booklist). Her first book was published in 1995, the result of winning a writing contest.

Originally from Texas, Candice grew up in California and lived for many years in San Francisco. She now lives in Minneapolis, MN, where she is still getting used to the winters. She has degrees in Art History from the University of California. Before becoming a full-time writer, she spent several years in high tech marketing, and her last position was as Director of Marketing Operations for a software company. Her award-winning website is often cited for its Collections and its Regency era information. It is the only author website listed among the online resources at the Jane Austen Centre in England, and has also been referenced by the Museum of London.
