Hello Precita Eyes Community!

One of our community members, Ernie Rivera, is trying to find a new home for his beloved Griffin Press (used for etching, intaglio, and lithography prints). As you can see, it is still in perfect condition. Rivera is looking to sell it to either an individual artist or institution. He is willing to donate it, as long as he will still be able to have access to it to print his own work. Email [email protected] or DM us if you are at all interested!

Hello Precita Eyes Community and hopefully new friends!

For 30 years, Precita Eyes Muralists have been giving children and adults alike the opportunity to explore their spray art ambitions in the safety of Precita Park. Each 3rd Saturday of July, we set up temporary walls, supply all of the spray paint and materials, and give our community an space to perform on stage. We have loved keeping this tradition alive (since the 90s) and look forward to the Urban Youth Arts Festival every year.

But, but for our 30th Anniversary, we need your help. Last year, the grant that we have relied on to fund this event for years has changed their eligibility, disqualifying us. We were able to successfully run the event last year, but are struggling to find the funds this year.

Please help us by donating what you can. The funds we collect will go to the price of paying the park permit fee, renting a stage for our youth performers, renting a sound system, and renting a generator to power it.

All extra funds will first go to paying our youth performers on stage and doing spray art (for whom this will be their first professional job), buying extra material, and – if we get an overwhelming wave of love and support – the creating of a commemorative T-Shirt.

This link will bring you to a document that not only explains how this event will be run, but will include a detailed budget of where the funds will go.

“Community Spirit”©2020
- Ever since the community fought to retain our studio at 348 Precita Ave, Precita Eyes wanted to commemorate that fight. Then Covid happened. During that time, dozens of artists and neighbors took turns, 6ft apart, to paint this massive mural.

348 Studio Acquisition
- Our Permanent Home since 1980. It was put on the market for sale in 2018, but the Precita community banded together to help us save the space not only for us, but for the other tenants. 2020 the building was muralized!

"Culture of the Crossroads"©1998, Acrylic on Cinder Blocks on the exterior of the McDonald's on Mission and 24th St.

Before 1998, Precita Eyes Muralists was based in the Studio on 348 Precita Ave and in the storefront next door. Sadly we were evicted from that storefront space, sending us into a panic about where we could possibly move to.

Originally, our Director Susan was looking at a space on the corner of Balmy Alley and 24th, but with no money and no loan, that place slipped through our fingers. Then something amazing happened. A building on 24th and Harrison St. became available for sale, and the owner wanted us to have it.

Despite a bank loan and a loan from the building owner himself, we were still short of the amount we would need to make that building our new home. That was when the owner of the McDonald's commissioned us to paint a mural on the walls that represent the Mission District. 16 artists, our Urban Youth Arts class, and local children volunteered their time to paint this mural.

We were able to buy the building and created our Mural Arts & Visitors Center.

"A Bountiful Harvest" ©1980, Acrylic on Stucco on the store front of the original China Books and Periodicals () in San Francisco.

This was Precita Eyes Muralists' first monumental mural commission since our group was formed. We were invited by the bookstore owners to create this beautiful scene of agriculture on their storefront.

China Books and Periodicals Co. holds a significant importance in San Francisco. They were the only distributor of Chinese publications and newspapers in the USA during China's 80 years of isolation.

According to the , one of the first places Chinese Dignitaries visited after the isolation period was this very bookstore. In the photo documenting the event, you can see one of Susan's son being held by one of those dignitaries.
