Last weekend, the Marine Mammal Center brought their Stewardship Saturday to the shoreline, and Wild Oyster Project got to share a COSMO (Community Oyster Science Monitoring Opportunity) with a group of local high school students!
Students jumped right into fieldwork, working in teams to survey quadrats along a transect at the tideline. They collected valuable data on the density and diversity of sea lettuce, oysters, barnacles, and crabs. One group counted 40 Olys on just one rock! It was a great opportunity to learn some species ID skills and all about the estuary food web while contributing to ongoing habitat monitoring at Heron’s Head Park.
Thanks to the Marine Mammal Center for making this collaboration possible and for helping inspire the next generation of ocean stewards! 💙🌎🦀🦪
