The National Low Income Housing Coalition recently released their 2026 “Out of Reach” report which shows that California continues to be the state with the highest “housing wage” across the nation.

These findings affirm what many Bay Area residents already know, see, and feel in their day-to-day lives: families and workers are struggling with severely high housing costs that outpace wages. It’s absolutely critical that we take action to keep more Bay Area residents in their homes and expand the supply of affordable housing.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a housing bill yesterday that will change how the state finances and delivers new affordable housing units.

AB 179 is a housing budget trailer bill, aimed at modernizing California’s affordable housing finance system and strengthening the state’s impact of housing investments. The bill will reduce the cost of building affordable housing by an estimated $60,000 to $70,000 per unit through one-stop shop financing reforms and impact fee changes.
