What if rabies isn’t as far away as you think?

Rabies is often seen as a disease affecting distant or underserved communities. But rabies has been reported in the United States too. In California alone, more than 200 animal rabies cases have been reported each year since 2016.

And this summer in Tanzania, IVO and TAWESO vaccinated more than 3,100 dogs and cats during a regional rabies outbreak.

So what connects a rabies case in California to a vaccination campaign in Tanzania?

The answer goes beyond geography.

We explored why vaccinating animals, treating exposures, educating communities, and expanding access to veterinary care all matter in the fight against rabies.

We've been going through last year's photos, and we can't pick one.

There's the table mid-laugh with wine glasses everywhere. The dance floor that appeared around 9pm. And there's the moment a champagne glass is held mid-air while guest watch watch a brief film about our Horse Health & Welfare Program in the Philippines.

Remote villages. Mass vaccinations. Animals and families who needed help and got it.

Good food. Great wine. Dance music. One story that stopped all three.

We are in Kongwa, working alongside our partner TAWESO because right now, this district has an active rabies outbreak, and people are dying from it.

Up to 1,500 people a year in Tanzania die from rabies. Probably more; honestly, a lot of rural cases never make it into any official count. What's hard to sit with is that none of this has to happen. A rabies vaccine costs almost nothing next to what it costs to treat someone after they've been bitten.

So with TAWESO, we're going door to door, village to village: vaccinating dogs and cats, doing spay and neuter, and giving vet care to animals most of these communities couldn't otherwise afford to treat. A dog that's been vaccinated can't pass rabies to the kid who plays with it every day.

We got the call about a rabies outbreak in central Tanzania, and our teams didn't wait around.

Our partners at the Tanzania Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO) are already out with mobile rural clinics—driving to communities that don't have a vet within reach, some for the first time ever.

Here's what that actually looks like on the ground: teaching families what rabies looks like and how it spreads, vaccinating every animal we can get our hands on, and running spay/neuter clinics alongside it.

People sometimes ask why spay/neuter matters in an outbreak response. Here's why—fewer unwanted litters means fewer free-roaming animals, and fewer free-roaming animals means the disease has fewer paths between animals and people. It's not a side project. It's part of stopping the spread.

Rabies kills nearly everyone who gets it once symptoms show up.
That's what makes this urgent, not optional.

Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease.

Since 2022, IVO has trained and equipped veterinary professionals in Tanzania to improve animal health and reduce rabies transmission.

IVO is currently working with our partner Tanzania Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO) nzania Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO) to address a regional rabies outbreak.

These clinics protect both animals and people by breaking the cycle of rabies transmission.

Mission Bay is about to be full of dogs, treats, and people taking way too many pictures of their pets. As it should be.

We're hosting a PAWtrait PAWty at Bark at Spark this Sunday—pet portraits, activities, and a genuinely nice excuse to get outside with your dog and meet other people who also talk to their dog like it's a person.

The fun part is real. So is the impact: every bit of it helps fund IVO's veterinary care for animals in the Bay Area and in the communities we work with overseas, from Kenya to Nepal.

From placing her first catheters to completing her first successful intubation, Emeline’s experience shows how IVO provides veterinary students with hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world experience in community medicine.

That's how many veterinary students, practitioners, and community animal health workers we trained by IVO in 2025-26. Not people who watched us work—people who can now do the work themselves, because you supported us.

On the Warm Springs Reservation, horses are more than animals—they're part of the community. But with nearly 5,000 horses on the land, the herd faces growing challenges that affect animal health, natural resources, and the community itself.

This video follows how the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs partnered with IVO and Oregon State University to deliver two days of veterinary care and hands-on training. Together, they performed equine infectious anemia (EIA) testing, vaccinations, dental care, and castrations while preparing healthier horses for the tribe's annual horse sale.
