A special live concert! Left Coast Chamber Ensemble’s Anna Presler and Leighton Fong return to the Claremont Branch to play a vibrant violin + cello duet by Hungarian composer Pál Hermann. (You can read the fascinating story of the rediscovery of his music in Cello by Kate Kennedy.)

Hear the clarinet become “the mourner” in Thea Musgrave’s ‘Threnody’ 🎶

“In the first section the chords are loud and implacable and interspersed with a misty figure that rises like incense in a great gothic cathedral. The clarinet, the ‘mourner,’ decorates the texture with an impassioned recitative. In the second section grief erupts into turmoil and anger and this mood is echoed in the piano. Eventually the music calms and the third section becomes a lament. This in turn merges into a coda where… a softly rising scale in the clarinet suggests that the mourner has found peace.” — Thea Musgrave, on ‘Threnody’

Left Coast’s Pathways Program provides free professional, mentor-guided workshops, performances, and recordings for composers with limited access to these opportunities. Composer Spotlight! Justin Trujillo 🎵

Tomorrow! Join us for the world premiere of Justin Trujillo’s new work ‘Iguana En La Sombra.’ Justin composed the piece through Left Coast’s Pathways Program, a free mentorship program for emerging composers in California.

Arrive 30 minutes before each concert this weekend for a pre-concert talk, where Pathways Program composers will be sharing more about their new pieces.
