History & Mission
Project Pull was co-founded in 1996 by Harlan L. Kelly, Jr. and the late Robert Mason, two city employees who felt strongly about the importance of providing positive opportunities for San Francisco’s youth. They believed that they could “pull” young people into public service by providing structured mentorship to highly motivated students who demonstrate an interest in the fields of architecture, business, engineering, and science. Since then, the program has expanded to include work in fields like social services, criminal justice, and more, placing interns in over twenty departments citywide. By pairing young people with professional employees in these departments, and with the goal of instilling a sense of responsibility and civic pride, Project Pull empowers participants with the skills and confidence they need to be successful in the future.
