Justin is our Deputy Director for RSL. Justin Cordova focuses on the taxonomy of the Demon Catsharks. Justin received a B.S. in Marine Science from CSU Monterey Bay and a M.S. from SJSU through Moss Landing Marine Labs where he continued his research in deep-sea chondrichthyans by identifying demon catsharks from the Southwestern Indian Ocean. His skills for studying and identifying rare species of chondrichthyans have led him to Europe for examinations of several museum collections, as well as the island of Mauritius to help lead laboratory classes during the “Identification of deep-sea cartilaginous fishes of the Indian Ocean” workshop held by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month we wanted to highlight some Latine chondrichthyan researchers, and who better to start it off than our Executive Director Vicky Vásquez! Vicky studies chondrichthyans with a focus on taxonomy and ecology. She received a B.S. in Evolution & Ecology from U.C. Davis and an M.S. from SJSU through Moss Landing Marine Labs. Vicky has made several appearances on Discovery’s Shark Week and is featured in the documentary Sharksploitation, about the niche subgenre revolving around sharks and shark attacks in a post-JAWS Hollywood. Vicky is a part of the team that discovered and documented the first Ninja Lantern shark and the first team to successfully tag a Goblin shark. Vicky also participates in community outreach to educate about marine life and sharks in communities of low socioeconomic status, focusing specifically on Spanish-speaking communities.

The field of "shark" biology is bursting with diversity; from the chondrichthyans that fascinate us to the people who study them. We'd like to introduce ourselves, we are the Rogue Shark Lab! Founded by early-career Latine scientists, Vicky Vásquez and Justin Cordova, we envision an equitable career path for chondrichthyan scientists in which advancement and research achievements are amplified through public education. Traditional paths cannot accommodate everyone -RSL was established to support the individuals who feel they must go rogue to continue chondrichthyan research. To find out more about our mission or to donate, please visit the link in our bio. Happy Latine Heritage Month!
