What an incredible morning at our Excelsior Family Resource Center! 🎉

We were honored to welcome Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom for a visit highlighting CalKIDS — the college savings accounts so many kids already have, often without their families even knowing it.

Our Executive Director F***y Lam had the honor of giving opening remarks, and getting to watch our families' faces light up as they discovered their child already has money saved for their future — that moment says everything about why this work matters.

Investing in Our Team

Behind every service we provide is a team that needs to feel safe, supported, and prepared — so this month's staff meeting was about investing in exactly that.

Staff took part in a self-defense class, giving our team practical tools to feel safer and more confident in their day-to-day work and well-being. We also rolled out training on AI policy, helping our staff understand how to navigate new technology responsibly as it becomes part of our everyday tools.

Taking care of our team means we can keep showing up for our community. Proud of our staff for leaning into both sessions with such energy and curiosity! 💪

Two Weekends, Two Neighborhoods, One Community

The past two weekends, our team hit the streets to connect with neighbors where they already were — first at the Nihonmachi Street Fair in Japantown, then at XLCR Excellence Community Days in the Excelsior.

At both events, we set up shop to meet community members, share information about our services, and bring some fun to the day with interactive games for families and kids. It's always a joy to see kids laughing, parents stopping by to ask questions, and familiar faces from the neighborhoods we serve.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, and to the organizers of both events for bringing community together. Also a big shoutout to our passionate teen volunteers who supported our outreach work! 🎉

Excelsior Voices, Heard by Congress

Neighbors, parents, and longtime residents filled the room for a community roundtable with Congressman Kevin Mullin and District 11 Supervisor Chyanne Chen, hosted at our Excelsior Family Resource Center on Mission Street.

Congressman Mullin spoke candidly about the work underway and the real challenges of this moment, then opened the floor to questions. The conversation that followed was thoughtful and direct — a reminder of what happens when community members are given a genuine seat at the table with the people who represent them.

APA Family Support Services is proud to create spaces where residents and elected leaders can sit down together and truly listen to one another. That's community at its best, and we're grateful to everyone who showed up to be part of it.

🎒 FREE Backpacks for Kids — Kases for Kids Event! 🎒

District 4-C4 Lions Club is hosting "Kases for Kids," giving away 400 FREE backpacks filled with school supplies to low-income families in our community, just in time for the new school year.

A new resource for our Excelsior neighbors: a free food fridge is here!

We are thrilled to share that a new free food fridge has arrived at our Excelsior Family Resource Center at 4377 Mission. Huge thanks to a community partner for donating a commercial refrigerator and to ExtraFood for keeping it stocked with fresh, rescued surplus food.

With grocery prices continuing to strain family budgets, access to fresh, healthy food matters more than ever. This fridge means the families we serve can pick up fruits, vegetables, and prepared foods with dignity — right in their own neighborhood.

This is community partnership in action: one organization providing the infrastructure, another rescuing perfectly good food from going to waste, together ensuring it reaches the families who need it most.💚
