Building Community Through Conflict Resolution What is Mediation?

Community Boards operates the longest running nonprofit conflict resolution center in the United States. We have an excellent reputation for supplying high quality programs in the community since 1976. We offer a range of affordable conflict resolution programs and services to residents, businesses, schools and communities throughout San Francisco and surrounding areas. Our mediation services are

offered in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and English through our corps of 450+ highly skilled volunteer Community Mediators. Mediation is an opportunity to have a safe, structured meeting to discuss a shared problem. Our mediators guide this meeting, asking questions and keeping the discussion focused. They remain neutral -- they don’t judge, weigh evidence or deliver a verdict. The ultimate goal of any mediation is for the parties, themselves, to create a shared, workable agreement. Confidentiality, fairness and respect are the three core tenets of mediation.

What an unforgettable evening!

Community Boards’ 50th Anniversary Gala and Peacemaker Awards Ceremony brought together friends, supporters, volunteers, partners, and community leaders to celebrate five decades of peacemaking in San Francisco.

We were honored to recognize this year’s Peacemaker Award recipients and to celebrate the people and partnerships that make our work possible.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our generous sponsors, whose support helped make this milestone event such a success. Your partnership strengthens Community Boards’ citywide services in mediation, conflict coaching, facilitation, and community-based conflict resolution. It also helps provide scholarships for trainings and workshops, expanding access and sustaining the diversity of our 400+ volunteer Community Mediators.

Because of your support, this celebration was not only a tribute to our first fifty years — it was an investment in the next fifty years of peacemaking, service, and community impact.

We are proud to introduce our Raymond Shonholtz Visionary Peacemaker Award Recipient, Sharon Rose!

Sharon Rose is the kind of visionary who doesn’t seek the spotlight—she builds systems that quietly transform lives. For more than three decades, Sharon has been a driving force behind alternatives to incarceration, expanding access to justice in ways that are both practical and deeply human.

Sharon brought Project 20 into the East Bay (Berkeley, Oakland, Fremont), creating pathways for people with misdemeanor charges to give back through meaningful community service. Under her leadership, placements weren’t just about completing hours—they were about dignity, purpose, and sometimes even a pathway to employment.

As Senior Diversion Programs Manager at San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project, Sharon has shaped programs to address people’s needs authentically. She has led Neighborhood Courts since their launch in 2012, helping build a nationally recognized restorative justice model in partnership with Community Boards and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

This year we have two incredible recipients for our Gail Sadalla Rising Peacemaker Award!

Community Boards is proud to honor two extraordinary young leaders whose advocacy, compassion, and commitment to community embody the spirit of peacemaking.

Gloria Cuevas Torres (14) is a student mediator at Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School whose compassion, leadership, and commitment to helping peers resolve conflict peacefully exemplify the power of youth-led peacemaking. Through her work supporting fellow students, Gloria demonstrates empathy, courage, and a deep dedication to building a stronger school community. Community Boards is proud to celebrate Gloria through a special recognition at her school community.

Max Trujillo (17), a recent graduate of The Bay School of San Francisco and current Chair and Co-Founder of the District 9 Youth Council, has empowered young people across the Mission, Bernal Heights, and Portola neighborhoods to engage in civic leadership and advocate for issues impacting San Francisco youth and immigrant communities. Max will be recognized in person at Community Boards’ 50th Anniversary Gala.

We are proud to introduce our Community Boards Leadership Peacemaker Award Recipient: CLECHA!

CLECHA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Latina and Latino entrepreneurs by providing resources, opportunities, and community connections, and to ensuring all barriers are removed in order to allow such small businesses to thrive. Community members learn to navigate complex systems, access capital, and build sustainable enterprises—transforming exclusion into empowerment.

CLECHA is a powerful example of what community-rooted peace-building looks like in practice. Such work addresses one of the most persistent drivers of conflict and instability—economic inequity—by creating pathways to opportunity, dignity, and self-determination for San Francisco’s Latino community.

What makes CLECHA especially deserving of a Peacemaker Award is its holistic, relationship-centered approach. Employees do not simply offer technical assistance; they build trust, restore confidence, and strengthen community ties. Their services—from business permitting and financial education to credit-building and grant access—equip individuals with the tools to move from survival to stability.
