Julia Blanchette, Eta Pi/Case Western

“Patient to Clinical Scientist: Advancing Equity in Diabetes Care- Beyond Diet & Exercise”

Julia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven, an experience that sparked a lifelong interest in healthcare and inspired her to become the first person in her family to pursue a career in the field. While she initially planned to work as a bedside nurse, several eye-opening experiences during her undergraduate training introduced her to clinical research and ultimately shaped her path to become a clinical diabetes scientist.

In this talk, Julia will share her journey from living with diabetes as a child to advancing research focused on improving diabetes care and education. She will also discuss common misconceptions about living with diabetes, highlight the barriers many people face in accessing care, and offer practical ways friends, family members, and communities can better support those living with the condition.

Julia was recognized as a “35 Under 35”  Theta back in 2017!

⌚️ The time is 5:30 pm Pacific/ 6:30 pm Mountain/ 7:30 pm Central/ 8:30 pm Eastern.

Please join Virtual Thetas on Thursday, August 14th at 5:30 pm PT/8:30 pm ET to hear a presentation by Betsy Ford Maine, Pi/Albion. Betsy will share her father’s story, as one of the famed “Monuments Men.”

“My Father and the Mission to Rescue Looted Art In WWII”

As World War ll raged across Europe, a lesser-known battle was waged to protect the art of Europe from destruction and looting by N**i Germany. When Adolf Hi**er rose to power in Germany, he plotted to obtain the finest works of art of Europe for his personal collection. The “Monuments Men” were charged with recovering the art treasures that had fallen into N**i hands and return them to the rightful owners.

Betsy’s father, raised on a dairy farm in rural Michigan, left his architectural studies at the U. of Michigan to enlist in the US Army in 1942. His art background led to an assignment in charge of the recovery of works of art from two German mines. In one of those mines were the famed stained glass windows of the Strasbourg Cathedral. Betsy will share her father’s story, as well as her own. Betsy lives in Grand Rapids MI and is president of the Grand Rapids alumnae chapter.

Come to the August Virtual Thetas to hear this amazing historical story and participate in the discussion.
