A note from Sarah Avila-Ward on this Giving Tuesday:
Almost 10 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I was 36.
This marked a profound moment in my life. At my darkest times, Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS) was there for me. This community of resilient, funny, fearless, loving young people got me through. I am grateful for every day I am still here.
And heartbroken about the many friends I have lost along the way…including my best friend
Courtney Harrington LeBoeuf. She was a part of BAYS through her treatment and unknowingly paved the path for me to join a few years later.
For years BAYS has been planning a memorial garden in San Francisco to create a quiet space to breathe, and to remember the 100 women we have lost. We’ve worked tirelessly with the city to land a site, with our architect to create a wonderful place of peace, and with our members to raise the vast majority of the nearly 700k needed to realize this dream. We still need 200k.
This garden will be a gift to the city, the public, and of course to BAYS past, present, and future. There is room for hundreds more names, which of course I hope we never fill, and know we will.
If you are have been personally impacted by breast cancer, play in SF parks, or know a young adult facing this diagnosis, please consider joining me in a gift to the BAYS memorial garden.

It’s here… ! In the next 24 hours, we’re looking to raise $25,000 towards our goal of $200,000 to build the Bay Area Young Survivors Breast Cancer Memorial, the first of its kind in the country. Too many people have been impacted by this disease, and the Memorial will be a place for healing, hope, and remembrance. Help us start the day off strong by making a donation and sharing!
