Track or Die Weekend in SF ended with a TRCX race in GGP. Cooked legs from a long weekend, loose sandy dirt, and endless smiles. Thanks to all the organizers, racers, and fans!

This was a wild project, 2 iPhone 8’s mounted next to each other. One with a polarizing filter, and a polarizing gel on a tiny light next to the lens. This allowed one phone to record reflection, and one to suppress it. Shot with Chas Christiansen Martin Peter Bustamante motion with Al Nelson DJ Shadow Official apple 2016

Unpublished 1996:

The UCSD MFA program brought me to San Diego for avant-cinema in 1995. I had gone straight from preschool to grad school without a break, so when I got to San Diego, all I wanted to do was ride bikes and shoot what I wanted. As part of my work-study scholarship, I taught the intro photography lab at UCSD, and Gideon Choi was one of my students. He got me out to some spots, and I was able to hand tapes straight out of the camera to some incredible skaters like Dave Mayhew, W***y Santos, and Gideon, to name a few.

I had moved to San Diego with an Arriflex BL 16mm camera, and since the school had black-and-white processing, I tried to get clips with this tank of a camera. On April 1, 1996, I ran into Atiba shooting video of Heath Kirchart and asked if I could shadow. With his approval, I shot Heath on a long lens, working on this tre over the rail to bank. I was so cheap with film that I wouldn't let the camera get fully up to speed, stopping just past the white flash used to sync audio. It created a feeling.

I cut together an edit and brought a VHS tape to Grant and Atiba at Transworld a few weeks later. I ended up leaving San Diego about a month after that, so I never followed up, but about a decade later, I noticed that tape may have had some influence on Transworld's 1997 release Cinematographer. Then, a few years ago, a group of skaters on a bike tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles stopped by MASH, and there was Heath. I found this old edit and AirDropped it to him. It was really special to finally share it with him almost 30 years later.
