Nice write up on our recent visit to Alcatraz:

Tule Day on Alcatraz explores the indigenous traditions of using tule reeds to create homes, baskets, nets, and boats.

What an incredible day at the Tule Canoe event on Alcatraz—deeply grateful to everyone who made it happen. The opportunity to learn about the history of tule canoes for California Native peoples, hear the stories, and be part of such a meaningful cultural and educational gathering was truly special. It was inspiring to see the excitement of youth engaged in learning how tule canoes are made. Huge thanks to the Golden Gate National Parks and Conservancy, the California Academy of Sciences, and the tribal members who joined us through the invitation of the San Francisco Ramaytush Ohlone community.

On Saturday we had 21 members rotate through tours on the historic Monterey Clipper Golden Gate, paddling excursions, and classes on swim safety. The Golden Gate has been operated by the same family for 4 generations and Captain Sal Alioto, the current owner, generously volunteered his time and tours, taking our kids out on 3 rotations. https://sfbayhistoricboattours.com/

On Saturday, we had the incredible opportunity to visit Alcatraz. A huge shoutout to our friends from the Hopland Pomo and Oglala Lakota Peoples who joined us to share powerful teachings about traditional navigation on the San Francisco Bay.
Big thanks to the National Park Service for sponsoring our trip, giving us exclusive access to the special gardens, and allowing us to use the stage area in the Red Power exhibition for a meaningful teaching moment.

Photo dump of a few recent activities with our scouts. Makani cruised to Angel island last weekend and got to swim and row while anchored there, saw whales underway, and took turns steering a 50’ vessel. Who else gets to do that in middle school?
Next week we go to Sausalito for the community boating festival, and on the 31st we have our last activity of the season, a trip to Alcatraz. Then camp starts! We still have some spots open register and bring a new friend! https://sites.google.com/view/sf-seascouts/
