Domestic violence and sexual assault do not discriminate; they impact people of all backgrounds, identities, and communities. But while it can happen to anyone, not everyone has the same access to support, safety, or justice. That’s why it’s critical to center equity, uplift underserved communities, and ensure every survivor is believed and supported.

At BWRADV, we stand with all survivors, especially Black women and communities disproportionately impacted, because everyone deserves safety, dignity, and care. You are not alone. ✨

Child abuse affects children across the country, and the statistics are especially alarming in Black communities: 1 in 4 Black girls will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. It’s a reality we must acknowledge and work to prevent through awareness, education, and support.

Word of the Day: Confidentiality 🔒

Confidentiality means keeping a survivor’s information private and secure while respecting their autonomy and anonymity. For survivors of domestic violence, it’s more than a policy; it’s a lifeline. Protecting personal details allows survivors to seek help safely, access resources, and begin healing without fear of retaliation, judgment, or exposure. It’s a core part of creating trust, safety, and empowerment in every interaction.

At BWRADV, we honor confidentiality in all our work because when survivors feel safe and respected, they can take the steps they need to reclaim their lives. 💜

Leaving is not that simple.

Survivors of domestic violence face real barriers: fear, financial dependence, emotional manipulation, and concern for their children. It’s not just about walking away; it’s about navigating safety, stability, and survival. Instead of asking “why don’t they leave,” we should be asking how we can better support them.

Let’s shift the narrative and stand in solidarity with survivors. 💜

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Paméla Tate, Executive Director of BWRADV, has been appointed to the Human Rights Commission’s Equity Advisory Committee! 💜

In this new role, Dr. Tate will work alongside city leadership to advance equity, uplift survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and champion Black Maternal Health equity, among many other initiatives that strengthen and support our communities.
We can’t wait to see the positive impact she will bring, ensuring that advocacy, care, and justice remain at the heart of San Francisco’s policies and programs. 🌟

This Black Maternal Health Week, we want to recognize Daniel Lurie (), Mayor of San Francisco, for his leadership, care, and commitment to the well-being of San Francisco families, particularly in addressing the urgent disparities impacting Black maternal health.

In San Francisco, Black families continue to face disproportionately higher rates of preterm births and infant loss. Efforts like Strong Starts are a step toward bringing departments together, aligning resources, and building systems that truly support healthier, safer beginnings for all.

At BWRADV, we know this work is critical because maternal health is deeply connected to safety, stability, and support, especially for survivors of domestic violence.
We look forward to seeing continued investment in community-centered, culturally responsive care that uplifts Black families and advances birth equity. 💜

Word of the Day:

OB-GYN = a medical doctor specializing in reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth
Certified Nurse Midwife = a licensed provider trained in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care
Doula = a trained professional offering emotional, physical, and informational support

For survivors of domestic violence, interactions with healthcare providers may be critical opportunities for support, safety, and connection to resources. The difference between a routine visit and a life-changing moment can be how care is delivered, whether it is compassionate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed. OB-GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Doulas each play a unique role, but together they can help create a circle of care that centers dignity, autonomy, and trust.

At BWRADV, we advocate for systems where every person, especially Black women and underserved communities, receives care that is safe, affirming, and rooted in respect. Because everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. 💜

Black mothers continue to face disproportionately high maternal health risks, yet many remain unaware of the powerful support doulas can provide.

This study found that awareness is shaped by access to information and trust in healthcare systems. Participants often fell into two groups: those who actively sought alternatives and discovered doulas through community networks and social media, and those who relied solely on traditional care, often due to institutional and socioeconomic barriers. Research continues to show that doula care can lead to more positive birth outcomes, including lower rates of preterm birth, increased satisfaction with the birth experience, and stronger postpartum support. For Black mothers in particular, doulas can provide culturally responsive, affirming care that helps reduce stress, improve communication with providers, and create safer, more supported birth experiences.

The study also highlights that simple changes, such as healthcare providers sharing information about doulas and community organizations expanding outreach, can help close this gap. Because everyone, especially survivors of DV, deserves to know their options and have access to safe, supportive care. 💜

Earlier this year, a powerful and deeply true statement was delivered before the San Francisco City Human Rights Commission, uplifting the voices of Black birthworkers, families, and communities.

We want to uplift the work of whose advocacy continues to remind us: this work is sacred. Birthwork is not a budget line; it is equity in action.

Maternal health is critical for survivors of domestic violence and those currently experiencing harm. Access to culturally congruent, trauma-informed care through doulas, midwives, and birthworkers can be life-changing. It creates safer spaces, builds trust, and ensures people are supported with dignity throughout their journey.

We encourage you to check out SisterWebDoula’s page for more information on their upcoming event and how you can support their vital work. 💜
