It is with deep sadness that FADF announces the passing of Joyce Juan-Manalo, a member of our FADF staff and family. Joyce endured an eight-month battle with cancer and transitioned peacefully on July 17, 2023 at the side of her loving husband Allan Samson Manalo along with her brother Boni Juan and his wife Elnora Ebillo.

Joyce was instrumental in shaping SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District’s arts ecosystem. Since the late 1990s, Joyce worked with the community from leading Teatro ng Tanan and Kearny Street Workshop to helming Bindlestiff Studio with Allan, supporting countless shows and artists, to co-creating KSW’s Celebrate Your Body fashion show to her favorite project of all, producing the Tagalog festival of plays from 2019-2022 at Bindlestiff Studio. Her heart's work and her spirit will have a lasting impact on the San Francisco Filipino American community she loved.

Joyce also worked with FADF for the last seven years, from designing and coordinating the Parol Lantern Festival and Bayanihan Community Center events, to being an integral part of FADF’s executive director search. Her relationships within SOMA and the San Francisco Bay Area Filipino American community was paramount to her work at FADF, especially with the following organizations: Filipino Education Center Galing Bata, Filipino Mental Health Initiative - San Francisco, SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District, Filipino Community Center, South of Market Action Network, Pin@y Educational Partnerships, Bayanihan Equity Center, Pinayista, and the Pinays Rising Scholarship.
To say she will be missed is an understatement. We relied on Joyce’s community building experience, artistic vision and guidance for so many things. SOMA Pilipinas will never be the same without seeing Joyce at the Bayanihan Community Center and at Bindlestiff Studio.
We love you, Joyce. We will always remember how you gracefully reimagined and influenced SOMA Pilipinas arts and culture. We hope to shine a bright light on your legacy.
