Kidney Cancer Association The KCA is a global community dedicated to serving and empowering patients + caregivers, and leading change through advocacy, research, and education.

The Kidney Cancer Association was founded in 1990 by Eugene P. Schonfeld and a small group of patients and doctors in Chicago, Illinois and has grown into an international non-profit organization. The KCA promotes scientific advances through two annual research symposiums and a robust grant program, participates in legislative advocacy, and seeks to be a source of education and resources for patients, caregivers, and anyone impacted by kidney cancer.

Upon his kidney cancer diagnosis, Andrew Allers had two fears: not knowing if he would be ok and not knowing what to do next.

He seized on the second fear and methodically - with help from his care team and support from his wife and family - set about eliminating the uncertainty by focusing on developing a plan that he felt confident in. Hope crept in, filling the gaps between steps and next steps.

Andrew said letting go of the outcome meant he could use his energy on educating himself, building a plan, and allowing hope to be a sustaining force.

What are the odds of a husband and wife both getting diagnosed with different, rare forms of kidney cancer?

Colleen Ann and Bryan have been together since high school, but nothing in their 26 years of marriage prepared them for this. Four years ago, Bryan was by Colleen’s side through her surgery for papillary RCC. Just recently, the unthinkable happened: Bryan was diagnosed with chromophobe RCC, and Colleen stepped into the caregiver role for him.

Switching places from caregiver to patient is a heavy experience, but they are figuring out survivorship together, one day at a time. 🧡

"Whether you are the patient, the caregiver, or both, you are not alone," Colleen shares. "There is hope after diagnosis, healing after surgery, and strength to be found."
