Last month, we hosted our year-end celebration in San Francisco to highlight all that ViviendasLeón has accomplished in Nicaraguan and Guatemalan in 2025!
* We have created 18 new farms in 2025 for a total of 88 farms in Nicaragua and Guatemala combined.
* These farms create food security for more than 3,500 people in four rural communities.
The impact of our training and farming program is life changing for women and their families. Each farm produces enough food for families and their communities, and women earn up to $250 a month by selling their produce.
Maybeline Chavajay, our program director in Guatemala, was also in attendance and traveled to San Francisco from San Pedro, Guatemala to speak about the importance of ViviendasLeón’s farming and small business programs. Evan Markiewicz, the ViviendasLeón co-founder and executive director accompanied her as well.
Maybeline works directly with the Guatemalan beneficiaries and their families, and shared how women in rural, indigenous communities experience poverty, a lack of education, a lack of nutrition, isolation, and gender inequality.
She then spoke about how ViviendasLeón works to make changes to these struggles: the program teaches participants how to produce their own vegetables, sell the surplus of their harvests, and gives trainings on topics such as women’s health. The program overall prioritizes supporting beneficiaries to be the agents of their own change.
