Calling all Fillmore grassroots orgs 👊🏾

The Geary-Fillmore Underpass Planning Study is forming a Community Council to help undo the harm caused by urban renewal—which expanded Geary Boulevard in the 1960s, displacing thousands of people and wiping out hundreds of Black- and POC-owned businesses. If your org represents Black, Japanese, or Jewish communities in Fillmore or Japantown, this is your lane.

This is a revolutionary opportunity to shrink Geary Boulevard between Laguna and Divisadero, and reimagine the land for housing, Black and Japanese owned businesses, transit, and healing. We’re talking future-forward, community-led, culturally rooted change.

🗓️ Deadline extended to Tuesday, May 20
💰 Up to $35K per org

Let’s be at the table, not on the menu.

🏡 The Holman Family's Journey to Home Ownership in 2023 through the Certificate of Preference Program:

In the 1960s and 1970s, San Francisco’s so-called “urban renewal” devastated thriving Black communities in the Fillmore and Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhoods. Entire neighborhoods were bulldozed under the weight of eminent domain, and families were given pennies on the dollar for homes they’d built their lives around. Generations of wealth were stripped away. Many were given certificates with the promise of return, but the system failed to support them. Today, the City is finally working to right those wrongs.

The Certificate of Preference program, created to help displaced residents now, also extends eligibility to their descendants, offering priority access to affordable housing opportunities. And while the path isn't always easy, for families like the Holmans, it's proven to be life-changing. Bro Johnny, the certificate holder, and his wife, Sis Dorothy, have used the certificate so far. His siblings and niece also hold certificates and may still pursue opportunities through the program, with the eligibility being open to the descendants. With dedication and guidance from their lender, the Holmans worked to clear up credit items and prepare themselves for homeownership. The result? A beautiful 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom home with two kitchens, a garage, backyard, laundry room, and Sister Dorothy’s favorite feature: the patio perfect for BBQs and family joy.

Since moving in a year and a half ago, they’ve celebrated birthdays, milestones, and the blessing of simply having space to gather in their own home. Her son’s 15th birthday was a full house, ribs, chicken, links, burgers on the grill, and hearts overflowing with gratitude.

🎥 While this video features Sis Dorothy, it’s important to note that Bro Johnny is the original certificate holder, and together they made this dream a reality.

Sis Dorothy A dedicated church and community leader, Sis Dorothy has always been a voice for the voiceless, advocating for the disenfranchised, championing early literacy and learning, and boldly sharing the good news of the gospel. From humble beginnings, she walks in quiet courage, leading with faith, and believing fully in what God has for her, her family, and the broader vision of kingdom building. She rises, again and again, with grace, conviction, and purpose. This is a true example of what it means to step forward in faith and watch doors open.

🏠 The Certificate of Preference gave them priority in the housing search and application process, but it was faith, preparation, and perseverance that brought the blessing home.
