Mercury News reports this fall’s Richmond Bridge plan balances traffic relief with weekend bike path access testing smarter bridge use, not ending bike access.

The decision is likely the first time public access to the San Francisco Bay has been revoked in such a major way in the commission’s 60-year history.

Starting as early as October, the bike path will close Mondays through Thursdays at 2 p.m., a free shuttle will run during closures, and agencies will collect data and public feedback over the next nine months to guide the bridge’s future!

We’ve launched a new petition urging BCDC to vote YES on the new permit application for the Richmond Bridge!
It doesn’t matter if you signed a previous petition—this is a new show of strength.

➡️ The application proposes:
👉 The bike path would be open from 2 p.m. Thursdays to 11 p.m. Sundays.
👉 The barrier would be moved aside outside of those hours, allowing the lane to function as an emergency breakdown shoulder.
👉 A bike shuttle would run from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. during path closure times.
👉 The application includes plans for a part-time westbound carpool (HOV) lane, with an environmental review underway to assess adding a third lane on the upper deck.
