Mercury News reports this fall’s Richmond Bridge plan balances traffic relief with weekend bike path access testing smarter bridge use, not ending bike access.

The decision is likely the first time public access to the San Francisco Bay has been revoked in such a major way in the commission’s 60-year history.

Starting as early as October, the bike path will close Mondays through Thursdays at 2 p.m., a free shuttle will run during closures, and agencies will collect data and public feedback over the next nine months to guide the bridge’s future!

Hopes for a permanent bike lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge have dimmed after a state commission approved a plan that will sharply restrict weekday access for cyclists and pedestrians.
