A new national distinction for heart care at Sutter. ❤️

Sutter’s CPMC has earned Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association, the highest level of cardiac recognition offered by the organizations. CPMC is now one of only four hospitals in Northern California and 29 nationwide to achieve the distinction.

For patients, the recognition reflects a highly coordinated approach to heart and vascular care, connecting prevention, advanced procedures, cardiac rehabilitation and ongoing disease management across every stage of the care journey.

CPMC joins Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento and Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in earning this prestigious certification, further reflecting the strength of cardiovascular care across Sutter’s connected network.

What if AI could serve as a GPS for surgeons?

In a first for Sutter, Dr. Hernan Bazan and the vascular surgery team at Sutter's CPMC used AI-assisted fusion imaging to help treat an 86-year-old, high-risk patient with severely blocked arteries. The technology transformed her CT scan into a patient-specific 3D roadmap, helping guide the team during a minimally invasive endovascular procedure.

Just like a GPS, the AI technology provided real-time guidance throughout the procedure. But every step of the procedure, from guiding wires and catheters through her blood vessels to placing stents that restored blood flow, relied on the expertise and judgment of the CPMC team.

“It’s like driving with a heads-up GPS navigation with traffic and weather data projected right onto your windshield," Dr. Bazan explained. "You’re still driving. You’re still making every decision. But the information is right where you need it."

For years, people living with facial paralysis were told little could be done to improve their condition. Dr. Gaelen Stanford-Moore is working to change that narrative.

Recently, she traveled to Ethiopia to train local surgeons in advanced facial reconstruction techniques. During the weeklong visit, she evaluated 45 patients and turned select cases into hands-on teaching opportunities, helping build skills that will continue to make a difference long after she returned home.

Back home, she continues expanding access to advanced facial reconstruction care in San Francisco, where she established Sutter Health’s first multidisciplinary Facial Nerve Center. The program brings together specialists across facial reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, neurology and other disciplines to redefine what's possible for patients with facial trauma and paralysis.
