For years, people living with facial paralysis were told little could be done to improve their condition. Dr. Gaelen Stanford-Moore is working to change that narrative.

Recently, she traveled to Ethiopia to train local surgeons in advanced facial reconstruction techniques. During the weeklong visit, she evaluated 45 patients and turned select cases into hands-on teaching opportunities, helping build skills that will continue to make a difference long after she returned home.

Back home, she continues expanding access to advanced facial reconstruction care in San Francisco, where she established Sutter Health’s first multidisciplinary Facial Nerve Center. The program brings together specialists across facial reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, neurology and other disciplines to redefine what's possible for patients with facial trauma and paralysis.

A serious brain cancer diagnosis changed everything for artist Vincent Serritella.

Just months after brain surgery and treatment through a new neuro-oncology program at Sutter’s CPMC, Vincent picked up his brush again with powerful purpose. He’s now painting 40 portraits of the people who cared for and supported him through his illness, including many of his Sutter doctors, nurses and caregivers.

Each portrait is more than a painting. It is a tribute to the compassion, connection and care that carried him forward during his cancer journey.

During National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month, we’re recognizing the ICU teams across Sutter Health who provide lifesaving care during patients’ most vulnerable moments. 💙

From trauma and respiratory failure to infection and organ failure, critical care demands extraordinary coordination, clinical expertise and compassion. Through early recognition and rapid treatment, Sutter clinicians helped save 772 lives in the past year among patients with septic shock—the most severe form of sepsis.

In 2026, multiple Sutter hospitals were also recognized by Healthgrades for superior outcomes in critical care and sepsis treatment.

Pediatric nursing is more than clinical care; it’s supporting children and families through some of their most vulnerable moments. 🩵

To help meet that need, Sutter’s CPMC, part of Sutter Health, is partnering with San Francisco State University to expand pediatric training through a new simulation room on the SFSU campus.

The space offers hands-on, immersive training where students can practice responding to pediatric emergencies, caring for infants and children, and building confidence in communicating with teammates and families — all in a safe, supportive environment.

By creating space to learn, practice and grow, the program is helping future nurses step into pediatric care with clinical readiness, compassion and a deeper sense of connection to the patients and families they serve.

At Sutter’s CPMC, we're teaming up with nonprofit Once Upon a Room to transform NICU patient rooms with personalized decor that brings comfort and joy during long hospital stays. From Stitch themed decor to hand ironed, customized pillows, and dozens of volunteers recently came together to turn hospital rooms into welcoming, uplifting spaces.
