withdrawal from Afghanistan was underway, Afghans scrambled to equip themselves and their loved ones with immigration resources that the U.S. For many, that included basic information about the immigration pathways that exist for those who have been displaced and refugees whose situations suddenly became more urgent. Because most efforts related to Afghans are focused on U.S.-allied or U.S.-affili

ated individuals, the Afghans leading this project saw a direct and urgent need to file U.S. humanitarian parole applications as their only option to ensure the safety of their loved ones. For many Afghans, humanitarian parole is one of the potentially fastest pathways to the United States and the only option for many Afghans. Afghan lawyers and organizers, together with immigration lawyers from Centro Legal de la Raza and Pangea Legal Services, coordinated emergency response pro bono legal assistance efforts to train volunteer lawyers in a matter of days. We continue to pair volunteer lawyers and Afghans seeking humanitarian parole, fundraised and dispersed funds for filing fees to cover hundreds of applications, and continue to work with partners to create resources for these applications. Today, we are matching hundreds of volunteer attorneys with thousands of Afghans seeking to file humanitarian parole applications to be reunited with their community in the U.S. We are also working on advocacy efforts for humanitarian parole applications to be expedited and approved, for the filing fee to be waived, and for Afghan parolees to receive full benefits when they arrive in the U.S.

Mohammad Nazeer Paktiawal, a 41-year-old Afghan father of six who served with U.S. forces in Afghanistan, died in immigration custody in Texas less than a day after he was arrested by ICE on March 13, 2026. This makes more than 12 deaths in ICE custody in 2026.

Mr. Paktiawal came to the U.S. in late 2021 to seek refuge alongside his family. ICE reportedly arrested him while he was taking his children to school. We join his community in mourning yet another loss of life at the hands of the U.S. immigration system.

Please join us in sharing a community-led fundraiser in support of Mr. Paktiawal’s family, uplifting their calls for justice, and condemning the cruelty and violence inherent in DHS and the detention system.

📆 Join ANAR next Monday, March 12 at 12 pm PST/ 3 pm EST as we gather to write letters to detained Muslims in immigration detention across the country during Ramadan.

We will learn more about how our communities are being targeted, show solidarity, and offer connection to our community members in detention. ANAR will coordinate logistics and mail the letters. Further instructions will be provided during the webinar.

On March 13, 2025, DHS arrested Leqaa and sent her more than 1,500 miles away to a detention facility in Texas, far from her family, friends, and community in Paterson, NJ.

Since then, Leqaa has spent Ramadan and both Eid holidays in detention -separated from her loved ones. She missed birthdays, the holiday season, and the new year, and marked her 33rd birthday alone in ICE detention.

Most heartbreaking of all, she was unable to support a loved one through their recovery from illness.

Next month will mark her second Ramadan in detention.

🤲🏼 Our prayers are with the family of Renee Good. We call on our communities, state and local offficials, and Members of Congress to demand no further funds go toward the militarization of immigration enforcement or detention.
