This is America at 250: Let’s Celebrate the Plurality of Our American Heritage

For the past 16 years, ASLA has collaborated with the National Park Service to host the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) Challenge, a competition to document historic landscapes that tell the stories of our nation.

In ordinary times, we would be jointly promoting the 17th annual HALS Challenge, but this year, ASLA is calling on its members, students, historians, and other practitioners to submit documentation of historic landscapes in our communities.

This is an open call to complete a historical report that highlights the history, significance, and character-defining features of a selected landscape. In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the founding of United States, ASLA is encouraging reports that broadly address the theme of landscapes of liberty and freedom. All reports submitted by August 31st will be recognized at the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in September.

Email complete submissions to ASLA and to Scott Keys at NPS .

We can't wait to gather for our 2026 Annual Meeting and honor the recipients of the 2026 ASLA-NCC Professional and Student Awards. We're especially excited to welcome special guest, Gretchen Wilson, National ASLA's 2027 President-Elect!

A co-founder of Dig Studio, Gretchen has helped grow, emphasizing a diversity of ideas and perspectives, collaboration at every level, and advocacy for the next generation of landscape architects to forge successful paths for their projects and their careers.

Did you miss our recent Lunch with Leaders webinar? Catch the replay anytime!

With the help of facilitator Mafe Gonzalez from BASE Landscape Architecture, our panelists Mariana Ricker of SWA Group and Betsy Peterson with August Design Collaborative presented ASLA's updated Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan.

Specifically, they discussed how how two of the accompanying practice and operations guides – Decarbonizing the Design Process and The Biodiversity Primer for Landscape Architects- offer valuable guidance for achieving both the Climate and Biodiversity LA2040 goals.

The intention of this “lunch and learn” was to share insights and knowledge to apply national guidance and frameworks to regional and local practices.
