The collapse of the Champlain Towers Condominiums in Surfside, FL is a devastatingly tragic event, and the families and community affected are in the hearts and minds of the Northern California structural engineering community. The Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) joins the National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) [https://www.linkedin.com/company/ncsea/] in offering our support to Florida so we may work together to understand the causes of the collapse and contribute to the discussion regarding how to avoid a tragedy like this again. We extend sincere condolences to the families, friends, and community affected by this tragic event.

SEAONC President, Emily Guglielmo, S.E. addresses the tragedy on KTVU and NBC Bay Area below:

Business Forum Presents:
Designing Effective Meetings: How to Have More Productive Meetings with Fewer Frustrations

Meetings can be a powerful way to accomplish work together and to leverage the expertise of a group. They can also be a source of frustration, concern, and overwhelm for handling information and engaging people. Designing the process of the meeting is as important as determining the content. Facilitating effective meetings is an impactful way to demonstrate leadership, regardless of age or experience level.

Come join this 1 hour presentation with Taryn Williams.

SEAONC University Spring Series

April 22: A Day in the Life of a Structural Engineer

Throughout our time at school, we learn many conceptual and technical skills, but little information about what it’s really like to be a Structural Engineer. This session will present, through actual Structural Engineers, a glimpse into their daily professional life. After a short introduction, our moderator and speakers will engage in conversation, followed by a question and answer session where you get control. We ask that all attendees come with a burning question for our featured engineers.

Date: Thursday, April 22 // 5:00-6:00 pm PT
Venue: Zoom
Cost: Free

SEAONC New Graduate Initiative

New graduates enter our offices facing a huge learning curve as they transition from students to professionals. They get hit with things like the building code, drafting, coordinating with other design professionals, plan check processes, and construction. New hires need to learn a whole new set of skills to become successful professional structural engineers. For most of us, spending adequate time teaching basic background information to new hires, especially for smaller firms and those that work from home can be beyond daunting.

The SEAONC New Grad Initiative (NGI) is intended to assist our members (firm owners and new grads) make an easier transition. The NGI is predicated upon providing new hires with important information needed to successfully and quickly transition into the workplace, through the use of SEAONC developed resources.

To kick off the initiative, the SEAONC NGI Committee would like to hear from you! We are interested in the young graduate perspective troubleshooting the transition as well as managers and mentors responsible for training new hires. Please fill out the survey via the link below:

ENGINEERING INTERACTIONS: SEAONC HISTORY AND LEGACY

Most of what we know about structural engineering is built on the lessons learned by the previous generation of engineers. SEAONC as an organization is no different. This conversation revisits the roots of SEAONC and its impact through the years to the practice of structural engineering. Join Reinhard Ludke, chair of the Hensolt SEAONC Legacy Committee, and Darrick Hom, past chair of the committee, for a discussion of the history and legacy of SEAONC. This discussion will include engineers, firms, events, and technical leadership from SEAONC members that have shaped the profession since 1930. Please bring your questions for an open dialogue.

Excellence in Structural Engineering
SEAOC / SEAONC 2021 Awards Program
Call for Entries

Every year the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) recognizes members and their firms for demonstrated outstanding achievements and excellence in structural engineering practice and project work. We are proud to announce our call for entries for the 2021 SEAONC Excellence in Engineering awards.
