Looking back at Amyel Olivero’s (Amyel Oliveros) exhibition at Sentro Filipino, here we have the artist explaining the different parts of his Dado Banatao portrait.

An excerpt from the artwork’s plaque: “After moving to Silicon Valley, the artist first heard of Dado, where their mother sought to network with influential figures like him. Though they never met then, the artist’s brother idolized Dado during his studies in computer science, as Dado was one of the few Filipinos to achieve such success in the tech industry. Later, through Sonia Delen, the artist finally met Dado and his wife Maria.

Known for his sharp intellect, focus, and joyful spirit, Dado’s portrait reflects his dual identity—on the right, mechanical motifs symbolize his groundbreaking contributions to technology, while on the left, floral elements represent his Filipino heritage and family. The Sampaguita flower, the national flower of the Philippines, is prominently featured alongside silhouettes of his family members. This Sampaguita motif in Dado’s portrait is mirrored in his wife Maria’s portrait, symbolizing their deep connection and shared heritage, intertwining both of their stories.

The portrait captures the balance Dado maintained between his work and personal life, represented through contrasting organic and mechanical visuals. It conveys both the sacrifices he made to achieve success and his enduring love for his family.”

Artist bio:
Amyel Oliveros is a designer based in San Francisco, where he currently works for a local bag company. Alongside his design career, he also teaches design at Stanford University. Last year, Oliveros held his first solo exhibition, which explored his personal journey as a first-generation Filipino immigrant, juxtaposing his life in America with the culture and memories of the Philippines. His latest exhibit features a series of portraits of first-generation Filipino immigrants from diverse backgrounds, addressing the ongoing debate about immigration in the U.S. while celebrating the Filipino diaspora. Known for his vibrant expressionist style, Oliveros uses bold colors and rich symbolism to convey deep narratives and emotions in his work.

📣Tag Artists! Tag your friends! Tag your friends who are Artists! 🚨

Sentro Filipino is looking for Artists with our new Exhibition Grant Program 🎨🎭

The Exhibition Grant provides an opportunity for participating artists to exhibit, perform, or showcase their work at Sentro Filipino for free (not a monetary grant). These include opportunities for placement of artwork in our Mission Street Gallery (our lobby exhibit, which captures thousands of viewers daily); production of larger public exhibits, workshops or performances in our main reception or assembly halls; or organizing other fundraising and social events at our facility.

Once selected, we will work with the artist/performer on marketing and promotions, logistics, project management, and an opening-day event!

Art of varying mediums are all welcome!
