The blog is a little dusty but sharing some thoughts as we move into a busy fall.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with dozens of organizations with a variety of practices. Through this, I’ve made some observations of what kinds of practices work well to maintain and develop the financial health and accountability practices of an organization. It takes a syst...

I love Canva. I feel like one of the perks of administrative work is that I am not required to be the eloquent one - thats the visionary's job. But inevitably I end up needing to send out an email to our whole list of constituents or let a group of people know about an upcoming resource we are offer...

This week's blog - the connection between our values and the way we run our organizations

Many people working in the church, ministry and nonprofit world do so because hey have a vision for a more just, equitable and peaceful world. It's written into many mission statements and longed for in many leadership meetings. While it may not seem the most important aspect of your mission, the wa...

More in our Tools of the Trade blog series - take a look at what NonprofitReady has to offer

In the ministry and nonprofit world, it's very common to get thrown in to responsibilities you weren't quite prepared for. In a new organization especially, staff positions are rarely clearly defined and segregated based on skills. What you usually have is a small team of passionate and motivated pe...

Whew - almost 200 W2 forms, 90 1099 forms and lost count of how many hundreds (around 800 I think) of donor statements sent out. We love our clients by pushing through January and it feels good for it to be over.

Before you send those donor summary statements out, make sure they contain the IRS required language verifying that no goods or services were provided in exchange for the donations.

01/12/2021

In the past, organizations have used the 1099-MISC form to report contractor payments. This year the IRS has changed that requirement for 2020 to the 1099-NEC. Make sure you have the correct forms!

12/23/2020

Those year-end donations will be trickling in, likely through the first couple days of January. If a 2020 donation arrives after December 31 or you don't get it in the bank by year-end, make sure to save the post-marked envelope as verification the donation was received in this tax year.

12/22/2020

Your payroll system might send out W2 forms automatically or you may generate those yourself. Either way, make sure your employees address didn't change during the year so those are received on time.

12/21/2020

If you pay bonuses to your staff for the holidays, make sure those are reported correctly on your payroll for 2020.

12/19/2020

Before the January rush, it's a good idea to review any contractors you have paid $600 or more and make sure you have a W9 forms for each. The 1099 forms for these contractors will be due to them by January 31.
