Sir JoQ and Crew danced at the “House of GLIDE” panel on q***r history tonight, and the audience eagerly questioned a panel of local legends.

Honey Mahogany opened the panel by saying, “Pride has always been about more than celebration: it’s been about survival, resistance and chosen family.”

Juanita MORE! testified to the power of San Francisco’s q***r community: “There’s a group of people I met at B***y Call Wednesday. We grew up together, came out together, transitioned together, and they are still my chosen family.”

All panelists spoke about the fear and tension q***r folks experience in the current political atmosphere. “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have always been a litmus test for the First Amendment,” Sister Roma said. “In the past we have felt the Constitution was rock solid protection. Right now it feels more tenuous, it feels like there’s a very thin wall separating us from facism, it feels those rights and protections could be swept away with a stroke of a pen from an executive order.”

But all the panelists also reminded us to be fearless: reminded us that the joy and resilience of our q***r communitieshave triumphed over fear and hatred for centuries. Minister Marvin K. White said, “The project to run q***r people out of church is because we are powerful… They run us out and tell us there’s no way back in because they are afraid of us! My faith is about getting people back to their power.”

Tom Ammiano had powerful words of praise for GLIDE: “What this church does addresses something that is missing from a lot of politics– even the gay politicos miss it. GLIDE looks at the class issue– at not letting the ruling class diminish the humanity we all feel. If that’s spiritual, then I’m spiritual!”

We invite you to join the spirituality of joyful resistance to power!

Today's Juneteenth Celebration was one to remember! Not only did we experience Minister Marvin K. White and Del Seymour's exceptional preaching, we also honored Shireen McSpadden for her tireless work as Executive Director of the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. As per GLIDE tradition, we presented Shireen with a framed copy of the chef's coat in which she volunteered serving meals to our community.

Kunal Modi, the Chief of Health and Human Services for San Francisco, said: "When I think of Shireen, I think of someone who woke up every day and said, I'm going to do the hard thing. And I find that deeply inspiring." GLIDE's Chief Communications and Public Affairs Officer Karl Robillard was on the same page, saying: "Shireen didn’t shy away from the hardest challenges impacting our most vulnerable communities. She leaned in. She built systems. She fixed things. She took the heat."

We are also happy to announce that this year's Pride T-shirts are now on sale! You can purchase yours at Sunday Celebration or at the church office.

Last Friday, hundreds of people packed Glide Memorial Church to hear Senator Cory Booker in conversation with our President & CEO Dr. Gina Fromer. He spoke about the people who influenced his life, the experiences that shaped him, and why he still believes ordinary people can make a difference.

One quote from the evening stood out:
“Don’t let your inability to do everything undermine your determination to do something.”
If you couldn't make it, or you'd like to revisit the conversation, read the full recap at the link in the comments.

Today at Glide Memorial Church, we kicked off a month of celebrating Juneteenth, Pride, and fatherhood. Minister Marvin told the crowd, "I don’t care what the doomsayers say: there is joy out there for us! We are going to get free!" He movingly acknowledged how the late Reverend Cecil Williams performed gay marriages before gay marriage was legal. Using the text, "God desires mercy, not sacrifice," Minister Marvin praised Rev. Cecil for a mercy that outstripped what the law required of him.

He expanded on this theme by saying the people of the Tenderloin should not sacrifice themselves to "what someone's idea of what a clean city might be," a line that was greeted with thunderous applause. Minister Marvin also acknowledged GLIDE's history of advocating for people suffering from AIDS, and prayed for everyone to experience belonging. Happy Pride!

Fire Within is coming to the Roxie Theater on June 22.

Filmed over the course of a year inside GLIDE Memorial Church and throughout the Tenderloin, the documentary follows several people as they navigate recovery, homelessness, mental health challenges, and the search for stability in San Francisco.

Their stories offer a powerful look at the realities many people face every day, while highlighting the resilience, dignity, and strength that often go unseen.

Today, we made history right here at Glide Memorial Church.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker came to GLIDE and delivered a powerful message on democracy, voting rights, civil rights, and the responsibility we all have to care for one another.

Assemblymember Matt Haney welcomed the crowd and introduced Senator Booker before he took the stage. Following his remarks, Senator Booker sat down with our President & CEO, Dr. Gina Fromer, for a conversation that had the room locked into every word.

As Senator Booker said:
“Think about ridiculous phrases like ‘the working poor.’ No one who is working should be poor! You know what else is ridiculous: we take people who have fallen into addiction and let them go to our jails and our emergency rooms, which costs so much more money than creating communities of care and treatment that would deal with the problems in the first place!”

Thank you to everyone who packed the room and tuned in online. Moments like these remind us why these conversations matter.
