COMMUNITY RECAP — Crocker Amazon Park Meeting
Last night, the National Samoan Chiefs Council joined a packed room of neighbors at the community meeting with SF Rec & Park and the SF Giants Community Foundation. The turnout showed just how much Crocker Amazon means to District 11.
This conversation began in February, when Nu’u o Matai first gathered our community to voice key priorities. Since then, our Chiefs have worked closely with the Giants Foundation and Rec & Park to ensure Samoan and Pacific Islander needs were represented and included in the redesign process.
Many long-awaited questions were answered last night, while others called for continued clarity, an important part of any true community process. What mattered most was that our people were present, heard, and respected.
Back in February, our Council uplifted the restoration of the cricket fields, protection of cultural arts spaces, and preservation of community traditions like Samoan Flag Day, established at Crocker Amazon in 1972. We’re proud to share that Rec & Park and the Giants Foundation made real adjustments in response to these requests, showing what authentic partnership can look like.
Speakers raised issues of environmental justice, youth athletics, cultural preservation, and neighborhood safety, all rooted in love for this park. While perspectives differed, the shared goal was clear: a better, safer, more vibrant Crocker Amazon for everyone.
There is still work ahead, but last night renewed our hope. District 11 may be overlooked, yet our pride, resilience, and commitment to this space remain strong. Like the transformation of Minnie & Lovie Ward Community Center, we believe Crocker Amazon can shine just as brightly when we stand together.
Nu’u o Matai remains committed to this process and to ensuring our community’s voice continues to guide the path forward. Fa’afetai tele lava to all who showed up and spoke from the heart.
