Creative Arts Charter School

Creative Arts Charter School Creative Arts Charter School engages K-8 students in an equitable & academically rigorous education Creative Arts continues to evolve in breadth and scale.

CACS was founded in 1994 by a small group of families and teachers who shared a vision of an arts-rich, hands-on curriculum based on the best educational research and progressive teaching practices. They had seen other schools' attempts to innovate falter when faced with bureaucratic obstacles and resistance to change. But they persevered in a national climate that alternately supported and reject

ed innovation in individual school settings. And today our students benefit from a challenging academic environment that includes dedicated dance, visual arts, and music teachers. Initially focused on Kindergarten through 3rd grade, the school's scope was extended through the 8th grade in 1997. Creative Arts' first graduates, the Class of 2002, enrolled in a range of high schools throughout San Francisco. Building on our success, the Board of Directors voted in 2012, with the support of the staff and community, to expand the student body to 432 by 2016. To reach this goal, the school will admit two Kindergarten classes each year, as well as an additional sixth grade class in 2014 and 2016. By 2016, each grade has contained two classes of students and has served thousands of students over our 30+ year history. Originally run almost exclusively by our Board and a long list of volunteers, the school now benefits from an administrative team that includes the Executive Director, Director of the Lower School (K-5), Director of Operations, Middle School Coordinator, Director of Arts Programming/Resource Development, and the Director of Afterschool. We currently employ 18 classroom teachers; music, dance, theatre and visual arts instructors; a PE teacher, and a literacy specialist. CACS is required to apply to the San Francisco Board of Education for charter renewal every five years. We look forward to continuing our success over the next 30 years!

🏆 Sports Day Highlights! 🏆

Our students showed off their team spirit, favorite jerseys, trophies, and medals while sharing what sports and teamwork mean to them.

We asked students:
⚽ How do you stay active?
🤝 What does being part of a team mean to you?
🏀 What’s your favorite sport or activity?
🔥 What’s one lesson sports has taught you?

From teamwork and discipline to confidence and community, our students reminded us that sports help build leadership both on and off the field!

😴✨ PJ Day Highlights ✨😴

Today we kicked off CACS Spirit Week in our comfiest pajamas and checked in with students about the importance of rest, wellness, and self-care.

Some of the questions we asked:

💭 What’s your best rest tip for the summer?
💭 What helps you relax and recharge?
💭 What do you do to take care of yourself or others?

From reading books and spending time with family to sleeping in, listening to music, and enjoying cozy blankets, our students shared thoughtful reminders that taking care of ourselves is just as important as learning and growing.

What helps YOU relax and recharge? Let us know in the comments! 😴💙

Happy Earth Day Creative Arts community! 🌎💚

We have a special message from our Kinder class—last week, they marched to Alamo Square Park to share the importance of protecting our trees. 🌳✨ Their voices remind us that it’s never too early—or too late—to take action and uplift our planet.

At Creative Arts, we continue to do our part by encouraging everyone to pick up 3–5 pieces of trash after lunch. Small actions make a big impact!

Thank you to everyone who showed up this weekend for Green Schoolyard—a powerful day of service to help keep our campus clean, safe, and thriving for our students. 🙌🏾

Special shoutout to Etiquio for always keeping our school clean and cared for each and every day—we appreciate you! 💚

Let’s keep the momentum going—what does Earth Day mean to you?

During Black History Month, our staff visited MOAD as part of our preparation for our Living Museum and Mardi Gras celebration.

Grateful for a powerful afternoon of inspiration exploring Continuum and UNBOUND. This experience continues to shape our classrooms and creative work.

Our Living Museum is still up through Exhibition of Learning, come experience it. 🖤✨
