It’s been one year since the Mayor announced changes to car-free Market Street. So what have we learned?

🚲 Bike traffic is up 25% from last year — demand for safer, people-centered streets is real.
🚗 But loopholes remain: Waymo, Uber, and Lyft Black trips are rare, yet private vehicles are increasingly misusing loading bays, double-parking, and pushing cyclists into bus lanes.

We were proud to testify that the answer isn’t to backtrack. Instead, it’s to build on what’s working. Our asks:
→ Close the commercial passenger vehicle loophole
→ Harden and protect the quick-build infrastructure
→ Test transit vehicles in center lanes to free up the curb
→ Re-evaluate separated bike infrastructure between 8th & Steuart
→ Invest in placemaking to make Market a corridor people want to be on

Thank you to our partners in the Keep Market Street Moving coalition: . Special appreciation to Supervisor for convening the hearing.

Market Street can be vibrant AND safe. We’ll keep fighting for both. Stay tuned for next steps.

Thank you to our members for mobilizing quickly to tell Caltrain that proposed family bike policy changes would leave many riders behind.

Stay tuned for more information from us as soon — we will keep you updated as Caltrain deliberates on this process.

Caltrain is considering a policy that would ban bikes with child seats, fat tires, cargo attachments, and panniers from its trains to ease crowding during peak commute hours.

But that means parents who bike their kids to school and then hop on Caltrain to get to work would be stuck. So would riders who carry tools or groceries. These are exactly the people who combine biking and transit to get through their day, and they’d be the ones left behind.

The policy’s implementation has been paused for now while Caltrain takes comment from the public. That’s where you come in.

We’re asking Caltrain to start by applying the new restrictions only to peak hour express trains, then evaluate how it’s working after 6 months.

Submit a letter or show up to public comment at the Bicycle and Active Transportation Advisory Committee on March 19 at 5:45pm.

On February 27, a driver killed a 2 year old girl in Mission Bay. The city has so far responded by repainting the crosswalks at the intersection.

Tanvi Jayaraman, a mom and MD living in Mission Bay, writes: “Traffic violence is a crisis with a known cure. Hoboken, New Jersey — a city twice as dense as San Francisco — has achieved nine consecutive years with zero traffic fatalities by engineering its streets to prioritize pedestrians over vehicular speed. San Francisco’s refusal to replicate these effective safety measures is a conscious policy choice.“

We are heartbroken by the death of a child this weekend in Mission Rock. A family has lost a child, and a community is grieving a loss that should never happen. No neighborhood should come to expect this.

This is the second child killed by a driver on 4th Street in recent years. 4th Street is part of the city’s High Injury Network — a small number of streets where the majority of severe and fatal crashes occur. The city has already identified these corridors as dangerous, and yet, meaningful safety changes have not come fast enough to prevent the deaths of children and families.

We know what works. When SFMTA implements proven safety improvements, crashes, injuries, and fatalities go down. Delaying these improvements costs lives. As vehicles grow larger and heavier, and distracted driving becomes more common, it is the city’s responsibility to design streets that reduce the risk and severity of crashes.

Mayor and city leaders must act with urgency now to accelerate safety projects, redesign dangerous corridors, and enforce traffic laws so children can walk, bike, and play safely in their own neighborhoods.
