Today, Reusable SF joined the SF Climate community on the front steps of city hall to
demand that the Mayor and BOS maintain funding for climate and the Department of the Environment in the city’s budget.

Mayor Lurie said during his campaign that he “will prioritize climate action not just in words, but in dollars and policy”. Today, we wanted to show that the SF community cares about holding him to that commitment because we understand the importance of local climate action on the health and vitality of this city and ALL who live, work, and visit here.

We’ll be at this Tuesday, Nov 11th for a casual meetup for anyone who believes sustainability starts with community and wants to talk reuse.

Cubita’s happy hour is 4-6, we’ll be there from 5-7 🍹

On Thursday, we joined at the monthly climate happy hour at !

While others here are inventing new ways to fight the climate crisis, we’re helping bring back an old one: reuse.

It’s a system that worked before, and can again. Not all solutions have to be novel, sometimes it’s about re-normalizing what works.

Night 2 in San Francisco was alive with action!

Before the film even started, attendees were writing messages to local legislators, calling for policies that make reuse the norm. The room was also filled with conversation as local organizations shared ways to reduce plastic pollution and protect our health through sustainable, circular solutions.

The film We’re All Plastic People Now sparked deep reflection, and the audience carried that momentum into the panel. The questions were thoughtful and the dialogue genuine.

Thank you to Sports Basement Presidio for hosting this evening of film, discussion, and community action in such a welcoming space — and to all the local organizationsadvocates who tabled to share resources and inspire new advocates.

If you missed the first two, there’s one more chance to catch the final event of The Plastic Inside of Us series:

The scariest costume? The Plastic Inside of Us

Tomorrow at The New Parkway Theater is your last chance to catch our event on the impact of single-use plastics on human health and how reuse systems are a solution to create cleaner, more resilient communities.

Each night is:

🎬 a free film screening of We Are All Plastic People Now
🗣️ a panel of  local policy advocates and business innovators on practical reuse solutions
✍️and an opportunity to take action by writing postcards to our legislators about the need to re-normalize reuse

If you’ve been wondering how we can address our plastic pollution problem —this is a powerful solutions-focused evening to tune in to!

Yesterday in Los Altos was night 1 of our 3-part series of The Plastic Inside of Us: See the Scary Truth. Stay for the Solutions.

Before the movie began, the space was buzzing with local advocates sharing real actions the community can take to strengthen a more healthy and sustainable local economy.

The Los Altos Community Center was a beautiful space to screen the film, and while it was an intense watch on the dangers microplastics pose to human health, it powerfully set the stage for our panelists: local changemakers working to safeguard human health by re-normalizing sustainable, reusable options over single-use plastic.

Many attendees also took immediate action, signing postcards provided by that call on our legislators to enact and better enforce reuse policies.

If you missed this first event, we’d love for you to join us next week for one of the next two:
📍 San Francisco — Monday, Oct 27 (https://lnkd.in/g2bvtTiJ)
📍 Oakland — Wednesday, Oct 29 (https://lnkd.in/gcm6zCuc)

Each evening offers the same powerful mix of film, conversation, and community action —all centered on how reuse can protect our health, our planet, and our future.

The Plastic Inside of Us
See the scary truth. Stay for the solutions.

This October, we’re collaborating with reuse advocates across the bay area to screen the film We’re All Plastic People Now —a powerful film on one of plastic’s problems: its negative impact on our health.

After, we have a panel of local leaders focusing on reuse as a solution and an opportunity to take immediate action by signing postcards to legislators!

Did you know the City of San Francisco just launched a Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC) campaign? There’s already a good number of participating coffee shops, boba shops, and cafes across San Francisco but your help is wanted to get more of them involved!

What will I do as a volunteer?
We will be visiting target local coffee shops, boba shops, and cafes in person to invite them to join in on the reuse movement and reduce single-use cup waste by allowing customers to bring their own reusable cups.

How do I sign up to volunteer?
Sign up to participate in a training session on July 14 from 1-2 PM (link in our most recent highlight). If you can’t join live, please still sign up and we will send you the recording.

Who is already participating in the BYOC campaign?
You can see a map of official participating businesses and learn more about the BYOC campaign in general here: https://www.sfenvironment.org/byoc

ReusableSF is a San Francisco coalition re-normalizing the concept of reuse and advocating a swifter transition towards a circular economy.

As part of SF Climate Week, the purpose of our event was to ensure reuse had a strong voice in the week-long dialogue of a lot of tech-focused climate solutions. We invited policy advocates, industry leaders, and grassroots organizers to highlight how they are accelerating reuse initiatives here in the Bay Area.

During the event, we heard local wins, bold ideas, and further strengthened the momentum for building a circular economy here in the bay. Attendees shared how inspired they felt walking out — and many asked what’s next. There’s appetite for normalizing reuse here.

This was our first joint-coalition event, made possible entirely by the time and energy of a dedicated group of awesome humans.

An important callout during our event: a panelist called out the contradiction of holding a sustainability-focused event in a space owned by a supporter of Zionist efforts, which we’ve learned are greenwashing the violence against Palestinians. We deeply appreciate that truth and oversight being called out. A sustainable community is a just one and thus, collective liberation is not a concern outside the lane of the reuse and circularity movements.

The event certainly wasn’t perfect but it was full of connection and learning how to build a more circular community. That’s what we’ll continue to do — together.

If you were there and heard the panel:
What stuck with you?
What ideas or quotes are you particularly excited about?

In addition to a delicious 3-course Italian meal, diners at MAMA Oakland can enjoy local art on display. Awhile back, ReusableSF’s Laurie Caird was the artist behind the featured collection Digest: Lingering After a Meal 🍽️.

Artist statement (excerpt):

“Digest is dedicated to every person and resource involved in the curated experience of dining – those who farmed and harvested, chopped and simmered, selected the perfect glass; the seeds, the water, the earth. Painting the post-meal tablescape extends the invitation to mindfully absorb the experience – the company, the conversation, the sense memories – everything that made this meal one to savor long after the dishes have been washed.”

The collection includes 100 paintings of places she ate in 2023.

On our page, we constantly highlight the logistical, financial, and health benefits of reusable foodware because we know how impactful these factors are. But an often unmentioned benefit is that reusables also enhance presentation 🍽.

It’s been proven that if given a choice, customers prefer reusable food and beverage ware over single-use options. We would suggest that part of the reason is because reusables are a more pleasant and aesthetically pleasing experience.

When we look at beautiful art like this, it reminds us that reusables don’t just reduce waste, save businesses money, and help protect our environment—they also elevate the care and creativity put into the meals they’ll be (re)used for ❤️.
