Boots to Books was created after service members were noticing a large divide between the current military transition programs and the college admissions process. B2B is committed to helping transitioning active duty, reserves, and national guard soldiers earn admission to competitive universities and get employed. B2B is volunteer based consisting of active duty soldiers, veterans, current college students and graduates across an array of industries; each with their own unique area of expertise. B2B is a completely free service for veterans.

Cybersecurity is not one career path.

The skills, certifications, projects, and experience that help you land a SOC analyst role can look very different from what matters in cloud security, pe*******on testing, GRC, and other areas.

Understanding those differences early can make it a lot easier to build the right plan.

That is what we are digging into this Friday with CompTIA.

Boots to Books is hosting Dr. James Stanger, CompTIA’s Chief Technology Evangelist, for a free virtual event focused on helping members of the military community better understand the different paths within cybersecurity and how to prepare for them.

We will cover the types of roles out there, how certifications map to different career paths, best advice for cyber job-seekers, and practical things you can do while training, including labs, projects, networking, and other ways to build relevant experience.

Most importantly, the goal is to help you leave with a clearer idea of what you are actually targeting and what you can do next to get there.

You will also have the opportunity to ask your questions directly.

And at the end, FIVE attendees will receive a CompTIA certification voucher of their choice.

If you're transitioning out of the military and working on your resume, start here.

This is far from an exhaustive resume checklist, but these five fixes can make a big difference quickly.

First, translate the military language. Acronyms, unit names, MOS-specific terminology, and military titles may be second nature to you, but not to the person reviewing your resume. Write for someone who has never served.

They should never have to decode what your day-to-day duties were.

Second, turn duties into accomplishments. “Responsible for…” usually just tells the reader what your job was, not that you accomplished anything. Stronger bullets explain what you actually did and what happened because of it. Focus on actions and outcomes, not a job description, and quantify wherever possible.

Third, add scale where possible, it is often a differentiator we have coming from the military community. Scale gives context to your experience. How many people did you lead? What size budget or equipment portfolio did you manage? How large or complex were the operations you supported? You don't need it for every bullet, but some context is very helpful.

Fourth, make the target job obvious. Your resume should not be a complete history of everything you did in the military. It should make the case for why you fit THIS job. Prioritize the skills, experience, and accomplishments most relevant to the role you actually want and shown in the job description.

Next, make it easy to read. Clean formatting. Consistent spacing. Strong bullets. No picture of you or home address. No giant walls of text. A recruiter should be able to scan your resume quickly and understand who you are, what you have done, and why you might fit.

Bonus tip, if you include a professional summary, keep it concise, ideally 3–5 sentences, and use it to quickly show why you are a strong fit. Lead with the most impressive and relevant parts of your background, years of experience, education, major projects, technical skills, leadership scope, or other standout qualifications. Avoid vague language like “motivated professional seeking a new opportunity.”

The bigger theme across all five?
Do not make the employer do all of the translating for you or search for why you are a good fit.

You already know the value of what you did. Your resume has to make that value just as clear to someone who has never worn the uniform.

Save this before your next application, and send it to someone preparing for transition.

We are so excited to congratulate the newest recipients of the Boots to Books Define Your Transition Scholarship!

Each recipient will receive up to $1,000 toward one industry-recognized certification, professional training, or licensure, plus optional resume and interview support to help turn that training into their next opportunity. Everyone selected will receive an email by the end of this week with instructions to claim their scholarship, so if your name is pictured, please keep an eye on your inbox!

This round brought more applications than any scholarship cohort we have ever run - thank you so much to everyone who took the time to apply! We truly wish we could support every applicant, but we can only allocate so much funding to each class.

We have two scholarships open now and closing this month!

Boots to Books is incredibly excited to continue supporting members of the military community in accessing the education, training, and career resources they need to move forward.

The first is our Professional Upskilling Scholarship, which provides up to $1,000 toward one industry-recognized professional training, licensure, or certification aligned with the applicant’s career goals.

Recipients also get access to resume and career support while completing their training.

The second is our Education Resource Scholarship, which helps cover textbooks, course materials, or a laptop when education benefits are unavailable, exhausted, or simply do not cover everything.

We have offered this support every semester since Boots to Books began because sometimes one certification, textbook, or laptop is all it takes to remove distractions and allow someone to focus on what matters in that moment, their education.

And we are excited to share that the first round of books is going out this week!

🚨 HUGE NEWS: Boots to Books has TWO scholarships opening today!

We are incredibly excited to continue helping members of the military-connected community access the education, training, and career resources they need to keep moving forward.

The two scholarships are....

1. Professional Upskilling Scholarship
This scholarship provides up to $1,000 toward one professional training or certification that aligns with the applicant’s career goals and is recognized by employers (in relevant job descriptions).

Funding is paid directly to the training provider, and our support does not stop there. Recipients will also receive resume and career support while completing their training.

2. Education Resource Scholarship
Education benefits do not always cover everything. When benefits are exhausted or unavailable, the cost of textbooks, course materials, or a laptop can become a serious obstacle.

Boots to Books has provided this assistance every semester since we started.

Applicants must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at 50% or more of the full-time credit load and demonstrate that other education benefits are unavailable, exhausted, or have fallen short.

Whether you are pursuing a graduate degree or just beginning your education journey, we want to help you keep going and nothing we do ever costs a cent.

Your professional summary is often the first place on a resume that a recruiter decides if you could be a fit for a role, so make it count.

Lead with the details that make you uniquely strong for the position, keep it clear and concise, and make the connection obvious from the first paragraph.

Check your resume against these dos and donts and see where you can improve. Also, is there anything you would add?
