✨Three reasons why you won't want to miss the Xalbador Gogoratuz: An Evening of Bertsolaritza event on Saturday, October 24th!

1⃣ Two of the most celebrated voices in bertsolaritza today, Andoni Egaña and Sebastian Lizaso, are joining us from the Basque Country to perform. 🌏

2⃣ Three U.S.-based bertsolaris, Martin Goicoechea, Oier Pastor, and Nerea Eceiza Arregui, will also be performing. 🇺🇸

3⃣ In honor of the 50th anniversary of Xalbador’s passing, Basque folk singers, Aire Ahizpak, will bring their grandfather Xalbador’s verses to life and will perform a special dinner concert alongside accordionist Sebastien Desgrans. 🎤🪗

Bonus! Mikaela Goicoechea will take on the role of subject-giver, guiding the improvisers through their creative challenges, while Xabi Paya provides live English translation so everyone can experience the wit, emotion, and artistry of each verse — no Euskara required! 🎉

Join us this Friday, October 9th, for a Basque Film Series screening and discover the life and poetry of Xalbador (Fernando Aire Etxart, 1920–1976), one of the most iconic figures in modern Basque literature and bertsolaritza. ✨

Through the stories of his four children and his own poetry, this documentary offers an intimate look at the beloved Basque bertsolari and shepherd whose heartfelt, improvised verses captured the beauty of rural life, nature, and faith. 🍃

🎶 FRIDAY FUN FACT: The txistu is a version of a fipple flute (a recorder is also a type of fipple flute, iykyk!), whose name may stem from the general Basque word ziztu, "to whistle."

This small, three-holed flute is one of the most distinctive instruments in Basque music. Played with one hand while the other often keeps rhythm on a small drum, the txistu has accompanied Basque celebrations, dances, and melodies for centuries. ☺️

And tomorrow, you can hear it live! 👀

🎵 Garikoitz Mendizabal, will bring the sound of the txistu to the stage at The History of Basque Music: A Living Portrait of An Ancient Land at the Presidio Theatre.

We're three days away from The History of Basque Music: A Living Portrait of an Ancient Land, and San Francisco Classical Voice just published a beautiful preview of the evening. 🎶

Pianist Josu Okiñena, mezzo-soprano Noelia Ibáñez, and txistu virtuoso Garikoitz Mendizabal will bring five centuries of Basque musical heritage to the Presidio Theatre — from Aita Donostia's Basque Preludes to Ravel's Basque-rooted Piano Trio. 🤩Told through storytelling, not just performance, it's for Basque and non-Basque audiences alike. 💙

And the best part? They feature the incredible artwork of Miguel Carrera, also known as BUCLE, winner of this year’s BEO Art + Design Contest. 🎨👏
