Our Bay Area farmers, our restaurants, ranchers, wine makers, fishermen & women, cheese makers, and bakers can use our support. It takes a village to keep these small businesses open in times of pandemic, wildfires, and drought.

Stories of small food businesses closing permanently in the Bay Area are real. And stories of new food businesses opening during the without PPP or Restaurants Act funding are real. Do you know where [good] food comes from? For those of us in California, most of it comes from within 200 miles of where we call home.

There’s an intricate and delicate relationship between the food that nourishes us, the stewardship of our environment, and our choices as consumers. Our local restaurants also rely on—and sustain—our local food she’s with regular orders as well as experimentation with more niche or sensitive crops.

For our third round of grant making, we’re extending our reach to support not just restaurants, but the farmers, cheese makers, ranchers, bakers, wine makers, etc. who they source from🤌🏼

“‘It’s an existential crisis,’ co-owner Dennis Lee said of back rent. ‘All of our businesses are in jeopardy.’

The landlords for San Francisco restaurants Nopalito and Liholiho Yacht Club, for example, adjusted the rents to a percentage based on sales with a base minimum, said partner Jeff Hanak. But this month, that minimum will be back to its full, pre-pandemic amount. And if the restaurants have higher sales than anticipated, they’ll have to start paying back an additional percentage of the deferred rent, Hanak said. He and other owners remain hopeful but on edge about whether demand will pick up enough to help them pay off their debts.”

| Makes us think back to the 5% tech pledge we launched last December… if just 10 SF Bay Area tech companies donated 5% of their pre-pandemic employee dining budget, we would raise $7.25M to aid Bay Area restaurants and small businesses. One of the grant recipients from our latest grant making this spring.

🍋We’re grateful to be able to advocate for our local food shed through grants that help them stand strong on their feet after nearly 18 months of uncertainty, courage, perseverance, and relentless experimentation.

Valley opened during the pandemic, and was therefore excluded from financial support from the government. We were able to give their 75% female-owned team a grant this spring to support operating costs as well as earmark a local family farm🍅 and olive oil producer to supply regular orders to through the summer.

🌵We’ve been amazed by the work Valley has done to commit to its local suppliers, minimize waste, work with what’s available in its local, planet-friendly food supply chains, and champion fledgling wine makers.🥂

Feeling like we’re in the clear for the wellbeing of our local food shed because restrictions are lifting and the pandemic lockdown many of us have felt is easing? Not quite.

With a current drought and West Coast fires looming, plus handfuls of small food businesses that haven’t received government support, need remains for farmers, wine makers, and restaurants to receive financial support in the form of nonrecoverable grants (nonrecoverable = aren’t required for repayment).

With two grant cycles behind us in 2021, we’re here to ensure small food & beverage businesses get the support they need.

Our most recent grants were made to SF Bay Area restaurants, including — moving forward we are expanding our mission to encompass restaurant-adjacent suppliers like bakers, wine & beer makers, farmers, fisher(wo)men, etc.

Join us in ensuring capital (tax-beneficial for you or your company) gets to the folks who need it most as we emerge from the pandemic.

Ready for our first summer weekend with a stroll up to in downtown Napa, CA! 86Fund made a nonrecoverable grant to 6 SF Bay Area establishments in our last grant cycle in May, including Contimo.

Grateful for the opportunity to help mitigate costs and ensure consistency in orders from local purveyors for small, independent restaurants like Contimo and Valley, both in California wine country. We stepped up when the government didn’t.
