San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society

San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society Founded in 1991, we are a 501(c)3 all about promoting family history and the history of San Elizario to all generations!

The San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society was founded in 1991 after a conversation at a family reunion about the importance of younger generations knowing about their family history and the history of San Elizario. The organization was incorporated as a Texas corporation in 1997 by Transito Alarcón Macías, Olga Trujillo Hernandez, Erasmo Payan, J.A. Perez, Mary Perez, Ida Castellano and Ro

melia Gonzalez and became a non-profit corporation on December 31, 1997. Among its various programming in genealogy and its historical cultural events, the organization proudly works alongside the County of El Paso to preserve and operate the Visitor Center at Los Portales Museum and the Old County Jail, two of the most valuable architectural assets on the El Paso Mission Trail.

Members,
I wanted you to see some improvements made to the cemetery. SEGHS paid for one angel (from cemetery funds donated by membership) and the church paid for the other angel. The angels were located in an outdoor pottery store in Mesilla New Mexico by Helen Rojas and Magda Guerra. Magda, Helen and I went to pick them up in Magda's truck. They were installed by Erasmo Figueroa and Rodolfo Chavez and his fellow Knights of Columbus. The angels look absolutely beautiful!
The WWII memorial plaques at the grotto of Our Lady of Fatima were very dull and hard to read. Ray Borrego, Martin Medina, Tony Grijalva, Isabel Alarcon, and Yolanda Oporto cleaned them, buffed them and applied the necessary finish. Lo and Behold -the lettering is beautiful and appears to be gold plated, as it probably was originally when it was installed after WWII. Now you can make out all the names. Special thanks to the tireless efforts of Ray Borrego who arranged for this! For those of you not familiar with Father Victor, he is the middle man in the picture with Ray and Martin.

Were you aware of just how many Jews in Spain had to escape forced conversions to Christianity? On March 31, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Isabella and Ferdinand, issued the Alhambra Decree, an edict requiring the expulsion or conversion of all Jews from the Crowns of Castile and Aragon by July 31 of that year.
Hundreds of Spanish Jews took advantage the ships starting travel to the Americas as a way to escaper persecution. Thus, many folks in our Southwest have unknown Jewish ancestors! Join us to learn more!!!

Did you know that something special had arrived in San Elizario — and it’s sparking conversations about the past, present, and future of rural life. 🌟

Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, was opened on May 3rd and it will end on June 15th!
If you've missed it, you still have a few days felt to step into a story that explores how small towns evolve, adapt, and continue to shape our country’s identity.

This isn’t just a display — it’s a chance to connect with the roots of rural America and reflect on the crossroads our own community has faced.

The exhibit is now open and will end June 15th, so make plans to visit, engage, and be inspired. 🛤️ Tell your friends, family, coworkers even pet animals!
