✨ A Dharma Story from Dharma Master Cheng Yen

Material things help us live, but when desire grows without limit, it can lead to worry, greed, and loss.

In the story of the golden goose, a family received enough golden feathers to live well. But wanting everything at once, they lost the blessing they already had.

The lesson is simple: take only what we need, cherish what we have, and do not let greed become a bottomless pit.

🌱 2026 Tzu Chi USA Summer Camp | Journey to Our Roots 🌱

In celebration of Tzu Chi’s 60th anniversary, this year’s Tzu Chi USA Summer Camp introduced a special Journey to Our Roots, giving children and families an opportunity to explore the origins of Tzu Chi and learn about Master Cheng Yen’s vision of compassion in action.

More than 100 students, parents, and teachers traveled from the Tzu Chi Walnut Education Campus to the Tzu Chi USA Headquarters in San Dimas. Guided by volunteers, the children embraced the spirit of perseverance as they completed a meaningful walking journey to the campus hilltop, where they received a warm welcome from Tzu Chi USA CEO Debbie Lee and volunteers.

At the headquarters, campers visited Master Cheng Yen’s cabin and learned how Tzu Chi grew from the humble Bamboo Bank era, encouraging people to save a small amount each day to help others, into a global humanitarian organization serving 139 countries and regions. Through storytelling, children learned about compassion, vegetarianism, gratitude, and filial respect, while experiencing firsthand the values that have guided Tzu Chi for six decades.

The day concluded with a Jing Si Tea Ceremony and Father’s Day card-making activity, giving children an opportunity to practice Gratitude, Respect, and Love while expressing appreciation for their families. According to Liqi Shao, Associate Director of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Education Foundation and the camp’s curriculum planner, the goal of the camp is to plant seeds of compassion and kindness in children's hearts and help families build a deeper connection with Tzu Chi’s mission and values. Supported by nearly 50 dedicated volunteers, the experience left participants inspired to carry those values forward.

🌿✨ Eco Learning Day with Mesa Elementary School ✨🌿

A day of discovery, creativity, and kindness! Students from Mesa Elementary School recently visited the Tzu Chi Walnut Academy’s Life Science Garden, where they explored the wonders of nature through hands-on activities and environmental learning.

From learning about butterflies and plants in the garden to making mooncakes and creating meaningful gifts for loved ones, the students connected with both the natural world and the values of gratitude and compassion.

We hope experiences like these inspire young minds to care for the environment, appreciate where food comes from, and understand how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. 💚🌱

Every Thursday and Saturday at 10AM, you can join us in the fight against food insecurity by helping pack bags of groceries for our neighbors in need. Through funding from the New York State Medicaid 1115 Waiver and partnership with DoorDash and Public Health Solutions WholeYouNYC, we work to make nutrition more readily accessible.

🌿 “Seize the present moment and make it everlasting.” 🌿

This was shared by Vincent Chen from our National Headquarters Region. Chen, who immigrated to the United States in 2003, found support and a sense of belonging through Tzu Chi volunteers while living in a foreign country. Their companionship helped him get through the difficult early years in America, when he faced language barriers and the challenges of adapting to a new life.

Today, he and his wife, Berlinda Lin, actively engage with the community by reaching out to local businesses to inspire compassion and support for Tzu Chi. They also provide guidance and companionship to families receiving assistance, helping more new immigrants navigate life's low points.

“Master Cheng Yen’s teachings have taught me to cherish the present moment and to live with an understanding of impermanence rather than being intimidated by it. When I first went out to volunteer, I thought I was helping others, but in reality, I have been the one who benefits the most,” Chen shared. “By witnessing the suffering of others, I have come to appreciate my own blessings and realized that my hardships are not as great as I once thought. In fact, because I have opportunities every day to do good and create blessings, I feel even more fortunate and blessed.” Chen’s favorite Jing Si Aphorism reminds us that we must seize the opportunities to do good and create blessings when they arise in the moment.

💙 Three Organizations Unite to Support Dallas Apartment Explosion Survivors

On May 28, a natural gas leak led to a devastating explosion and five-alarm fire at The Clyde Apartments in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood. The blast, reportedly caused by accidental damage to a gas pipeline during construction, destroyed the entire 23-unit apartment complex, claiming three lives, injuring at least five people, and displacing all residents.

Immediately following the disaster, Central Region Executive Director Kuo Cheng Ko connected with Travis Houston, Deputy Director of the City of Dallas Emergency Management & Crisis Response, to coordinate relief efforts. Together, they arranged a distribution event at the Tzu Chi USA Central Region Office on June 6.

With residents losing nearly all of their belongings, the City of Dallas partnered with Uber, which generously provided free round-trip transportation for survivors traveling to receive assistance. This collaborative effort brought together the City of Dallas, Uber, and Tzu Chi to support affected families during their time of need.

Many survivors are Spanish-speaking and have limited English proficiency, so several brought English-speaking friends to help with interpretation during the event.

On June 6, Tzu Chi volunteers provided aid to 12 households, benefiting a total of 18 individuals. Through compassion, partnership, and community support, hope and relief reached families as they began the long journey toward recovery.

This week’s featured Tzu Chi USA Journal article reflects on the bamboo bank spirit — the simple yet powerful tradition that began with Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s first followers setting aside a little each day to help families in need.

Today, monthly giving carries that same spirit forward. It reminds us that compassion does not depend on the size of a gift, but on the sincerity and consistency behind it. Month after month, even a small donation can become a steady source of hope for those facing disaster, hardship, and recovery.

Learn how monthly giving helps Tzu Chi volunteers stay ready to serve with love, wherever and whenever help is needed.
