Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental, humanitarian organization in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC). The foundation focuses on four major missions: charity, medicine, education, and humanistic culture. The foundation also engages in international disaster relief, bone marrow donation, community volunteerism, and environmental protection. “Tzu Chi” means “compassion and relief.”

🎒 Every backpack carries the love and blessings of a community. Every helping hand lights the way for a child’s new school year. 💙

On August 8, NOW Hunters Point in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunter’s Point neighborhood came alive with compassion and community spirit during the 2026 Back to School Charity Distribution.

Despite the summer heat, volunteers worked together with joy and care, welcoming local families and helping children select clothing, backpacks, and essential school supplies for their grade levels. ✏️📚

The brightest moments were the smiles. 😊 As children received new backpacks filled with supplies, parents shared heartfelt gratitude for the support. Volunteers also offered words of encouragement, helping students begin the school year with greater confidence, hope, and peace of mind.

From unloading and setting up to guiding families and cleaning up, every helping hand made a difference. Volunteers also put environmental mindfulness into action by bringing reusable utensils and water bottles while looking out for one another throughout the hot day. 🌱💧

This was more than a distribution of school supplies. It was a beautiful exchange of love, dignity, and community solidarity.

🙏 Thank you to every volunteer and supporter who made this day possible. Together, we’re helping Bayview’s children step into the new school year knowing their community is behind them.

Buddhist care goes far beyond meditation. It can take shape through medicine, mental health support, disaster relief, community service, environmental stewardship, and compassion for all sentient beings.

At the 2026 Tzu Chi Global Symposium for Common Goodness at Harvard University, scholars and practitioners explored a question Buddhists have wrestled with for centuries: What is the relationship between healing suffering and the path to liberation?

From historical Buddhist physicians and community-based mental health care to Tzu Chi’s medical outreach, disaster relief, and the ethics of caring for animals and the natural world, the conversations revealed how Buddhist wisdom can move from principle into practice.

The Bodhisattva path is not only an ideal—it can be a commitment to show up, serve, and stay wherever suffering calls for care.

When devastating wildfires swept through Spokane, Washington, Tzu Chi volunteers from Seattle quickly arrived to provide immediate care, emotional support, and emergency financial assistance to affected residents. As they walked through burned down neighborhoods, volunteers listened to survivors' stories and offered comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

Disaster relief is about more than meeting immediate needs. It's about reminding people they are not alone. Through compassion, practical assistance, and hope, Tzu Chi stands with wildfire survivors as they begin the journey toward recovery and rebuilding.

After wildfires devastated his community, Spokane survivor Randy returned to what remained of his home, this time with Tzu Chi volunteers by his side.

Walking through the ruins was more than a visit to a destroyed property. It was a return to a place filled with memories, now transformed by disaster. Tzu Chi Seattle volunteers accompanied Randy with compassion and care, listening to his story and standing beside him as he faced the difficult road toward recovery.

In the aftermath of a wildfire, rebuilding is about more than replacing what was lost. It’s also about reminding survivors that they don’t have to move forward alone. 💙

💙 Uplifting Los Angeles Together

In honor of our wildfire recovery partnership, Tzu Chi USA extends our heartfelt gratitude to L.A. Care Health Plan for standing with survivors of the 2025 Los Angeles County Wildfires every step of the way.

Together, we provided financial assistance and personalized case management, helping wildfire-affected individuals and families access housing, healthcare, employment opportunities, and essential resources as they rebuilt their lives.

Because of this partnership, survivors have restored stability, pursued new opportunities, and moved forward with renewed dignity and hope.

Tzu Chi USA Seattle volunteers traveled to the Spokane Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) to support residents affected by the devastating Washington wildfires. Hear directly from wildfire survivors as they share the heartbreak of losing their homes, alongside volunteers who stepped forward to provide comfort, connect families with resources, and offer hope during a difficult time.

At the DAC, compassion took many forms. From listening to survivors' stories to helping them access the assistance they needed to begin rebuilding. Through timely relief and community care, Tzu Chi remains committed to standing with those impacted by disaster every step of the way.
