What is a Speak-A-Thon? A Speak-A-Thon is a special kind of meeting Toast To The Best traditionally holds whenever there is a fifth Thursday of the month. Since October has five Thursdays, the last Thursday is a Speak-A-Thon, where we have a meeting devoted to prepared speeches and evaluations. Any member can prepare a speech, bring their manual, present the speech, and receive an evaluation. We don’t have a grammarian, we don’t have a jokemaster or voting. We do have a timer, evaluators and of course, speakers. If we have more speakers than we have time for, we will run a little late. If we have fewer, we all go home early.

Why do we do this? So you have move forward more quickly, should you wish to do so. It also helps the club achieve our club goals, known as the DCP or Distinguished Club Plan. But the DCP is all about the club effectively helping our members (you) reach their (your) goals. So, we do it for you. And because we just like to get together.

So, come on out. Speak if you wish, evaluate if you are willing, clap, cheer, shake a hand, hug a neck (with permission) and enjoy!

See you at 7:00 PM! Psst – Bring a guest.

-Art Douglas

October 12 Meeting highlights:

Our Vice President for Education, JoAn Haase, did a wonderful job as presiding officer last night. We had one guest, a Toastmaster who is looking for a club that meets her scheduling needs. She has accomplished her CC, so would be a great help to our newer Toastmaster members. I think she will fit in nicely.

I was Toastmaster of the Evening. Mark Luna brought us a speech about networking for job hunting, while Rich Watson took us through a lesson in meeting and connecting with people. Amazing – you would think they colluded to bring us complementary subjects. Nandini evaluated Mark and I evaluated Rich. Nandini also did a role-play in Rich’s speech to demonstrate the techniques he talked about.

JoAn ran Table Topics, which centered around Halloween. Scary indeed!!

NOTE: The Division A Humorous and Evaluation Contest takes place tomorrow, Saturday October 20th at 8:30 AM. It will be held at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. The cost is $10 each, and includes a continental breakfast. I’ll be there. I hope to see you as well.

NOTE: Our club is the guest of Faith Lutheran Church. When they agreed to allow us to use their Parish Hall, they asked for a small monetary donation to cover utilities, and a donation to their Food Pantry ministry. Please bring non-perishable foodstuffs to our next meetings which we will pass on to this worthy effort.

NOTE: October has five Thursdays. You know what that means – SPEAK-A-THON. On Thursday Oct 29th, come and bring your manual and a prepared speech. You will get to speak, and receive an evaluation. Use these opportunities to accelerate your growth as a speaker, and your achievement in the Toastmasters Eductional Tracks.

You’re the Best!
