The power of narrative art was a topic at this past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con. On a panel shared with George Lucas (Star Wars), writer-director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) observed that "Myth unites us; propaganda divides us.”

I like that. Story can be personally impactful, persuasive even, regardless of genre, whether fiction or nonfiction. Only thing that matters is the aim of the author. Is it writing for good or writing for evil? Whichever, you still need to know your craft to pull it off successfully (usually).

Though we’re often faced with an audience of readers who have lowered their expectations or lost patience with what constitutes a good read, the writer should never.
