✨Intern highlight!

Our Collections Intern, Sloane, recently curated our Collection Spotlight for our newest exhibition! Everyday Treasures showcases historic objects from our archives, highlighting the unique details and features of everyday household items.

Sloane has also been working to digitize our Thomas Shephard blueprint collection and documents from our Scripps Family collection, helping make these historical materials more accessible to the public via our online archive.

Our permanent collection is viewable for free online. Visit our website to see the archives and learn more.

A huge thank you to our Landmark Steering Committee and Scripps Instn. of Oceanography for a wonderful Architecture Week program!Β 

The program featured fascinating talks exploring SIO’s origins and Ellen Browning Scripps’ pivotal role in its development with Prof. Molly McClain, PhD; SIO’s influential architecture with Rev. Dr. Mark Hargreaves; and the extraordinary scientific research and advances made possible by SIO with Deputy Director Jack Gilbert, PhD.

We also had the pleasure of visiting the historic pier with Ray Weiss, Distinguished Research Professor of Geochemistry Associate Dean Emeritus.Β

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us in celebrating La Jolla’s incredible modernist architecture. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, our dedicated volunteers, and the tour hosts who opened up their incredible properties to the community.Β

On September 16, 1940, the final streetcar made its way to La Jolla, arriving at 2:00 AM. πŸ˜΄πŸš‹

And just like that, after decades of connecting La Jolla with San Diego, the streetcar era came to an end.

Imagine being on that final ride home at 2 in the morning… πŸŒ™βœ¨ Were people celebrating? Saying goodbye? Or just trying to stay awake? πŸ˜‚
