It’s been a busy couple weeks for one of our newest members.

After officially joining our Club just a few short weeks ago, Nicole has jumped right in at full speed! Last week she signed up for her first functionary role as Ah-Counter. And this week she presented her first Icebreaker Speech…..and WON Best Speaker!

First time as Ah-Counter
First time as Speaker!
First time winner as Best Speaker.
Congratulations Nicole!

More Backwards Meeting fun!!

08/26/2026

Earlier this month, we had our first BACKWARDS meeting….where everything was topsy-turvy, wild and FUN.

It was an exercise to shake things up and challenge our presentation skills.

Since the evaluations of the speeches were given BEFORE the speeches, the Speakers tried to incorporate into their speeches what the Evaluators “said” they did.

The Grammarian pointed out all the interesting words and phrases we all “said” BEFORE the meeting started. And the audience member called out for saying a particular phrase would try to say that phrase if they were speaking at the lectern at any point.

The same with all the comments and actions the Ah Counter and General Evaluator included in their reports….BEFORE the meeting started.

This was our first attempt at a Backwards Meeting. And, based on the success of this one, it’s safe to say we’ll have another one in the months to come.

Some of Balboa Park Toastmasters members enjoyed a pre-4th of July social recently at the Model Yacht Club in Mission Bay. It was a super fun pot luck picnic and an opportunity to let our hair down!

Join us in person or online every Wednesday from 11:30 PST to 12:30 PST.

We recognized a rare and exciting achievement at Balboa Park Toastmasters recently -
Perfect Attendance to Alejandra Sandoval!

At BPTM, we encourage members to attend as often as possible, but completely understand how life gets in the way. Some members can attend only once a month while others miss only once every few months.

But attending every Wednesday meeting for a year - Wow! That is an achievement!
And the regular attendance shows in Alejandra’s vast improvement in public speaking. Congratulations!

“Success is built through the discipline of showing up.”

Balboa Park Toastmasters meets every Wednesday from 11:30-12:30 at the Mission Hills Library (215 W. Washington St. San Diego)

Last week’s TABLE TOPICS took us out of our comfort zones and really gave us a challenge.

How would YOU respond?

The question was: Imagining you are a highly regarded art professor, what would you “teach” the class about the particular sculpture you are shown?
What is it?
What does it symbolize?
Where is it?
Tell us anything about it.

We’ll show you which one to talk about when you get to the lectern. Be creative and speak for a minimum of 1-minute.
Think quick….and have FUN!

The winner for that day’s BEST Table Topics Speaker was Elizabeth for her wildly creative description of the sculpture she was shown. And hats off to our Table Topics Master Mark K. for thinking up a great Table Topics session.

——————
Table Topics is the short, impromptu speaking portion of every meeting.

That day’s Table Topics Master asks a random question to a random member in the audience. In the 20-seconds or so it takes to walk from the audience to the lectern, the selected member thinks of a response and answers the question for at least 1-minute.
It’s a fun and exciting way to practice for those situations that we might be asked to speak when we’re not prepared to.
